hey all, im currently in the process of buying all of the components necessary to do a mini-me swap. I bought a vtec head from him months ago. My question is: How do i tell if its a z6 or a y8 head?
He told me that its from a 96-00, and it'll bolt right on my stock a6 block. I thought sure, why not. But now that i've done some research, it might look like i have a z6 head....(i go mainly by the valve cover)....It has the "H" emblem on the left side, and VTEC and Honda to the the right of it.
wat do you guys/gals think? I dont want to make a mistake and buy all of the wrong crap.

It shouldn't really matter. I think the cam gear is the only difference in the two of them. They shoul both bolt right on and all the parts should be interchangeable between them.
I believe you are going to need the y8 cam gear for either though.
Make sure you use ARP headstuds when puttin that VTEC head on there. ARP is Money.

can you take a close up pic of the bottom of the head where the valves are? if so, i should be able to tell you if its z6 or y8.

If i was you, i would wait to put it in till i had the money for some new valves, springs, retainers, and a good port and polish. Its already off, so why not wait a while till u can get a really good head on there?

yeah, i know...but i also would like to know which head i have first....z6 or y8...that would just put my mind at ease...and also, i have put your input into consideration as well, but that'll mean more $, when all i wanted was a lil' extra power than my a6....but i am considering which cam to go with, along with the valves, springs and retainers....do u know where i can get a good port and polish for cheap?...(im on a budget)...and also where to get the valves, springs and retainers installed?..(i lack the know how)....and where to get the head installed?...(again, i lack the know how)....:(

its kinda hard to tell becaue the carbon on it blends the contours, but it looks like a y8 head.

If it's from a 96-00 that valve cover is from a Z6... My Y8 just says honda on it.
eh i heard the Y8 has a slightly better intake manifold.

yeah...the guy i bought it from gave me the intake manifold to it also...but i think its the z6 intake manifold....it doesn't have any writing on it though...its the same shape as the i.m. that comes with the d16a6.

that head is a z6 a y8 has square chambers which have higher compression (like .1) but a z6 flows better
