Transmission & Differential - Pop! Grind! No Clutch.. Help!

I just recently purchased a 93 Honda Civic LX 1.5 Manual from a friend of mine. I've noticed recently the clutch pedal seemed to be marginally getting looser. Barely noticable though. Well tonight on my lunch break, I was stopped at a railroad crossing waiting for a train. The train passed and I pushed the clutch in, shifted to first and as soon as I gave it gas and started letting my foot off the clutch, I heard a pop and the engine revved . The car went nowhere. I heard a grinding noise when the engine revved and it is in gear. I tried second gear, same thing, grinding, and engine revving. Same with every gear including reverse.

I've experienced clutches dying before, but never with the grinding noise I'm hearing. Typically in my experience it is as if the car is in neutral, with the engine just revving. I have two questions for all you techies...

1) Do you think my entire clutch mechanism will need replaced?? Or perhaps just one piece of it?

2) Do you know approximately how much I can expect to pay to fix this? :(

When you push on the peddle(SP) is it any softer than it used to be or does it sink to the floor or anything.
Maybe check your clutch slave cylinder. If it went out you would experience problems like what you are describing.

Hmm... it sounds like the clutch fork may have snapped, or you blew a spring out of the clutch disk, or something similar.

Assuming you need a whole clutch kit, expect to pay around $100 for it. Depending on what else happened, you may need more parts. Labor depends on whether you're doing it yourself. If you are, I suggest you get it apart pretty soon so you can find out what exactly you need.

Thank you for your replies. In my haste to get my problem fixed, I had my car towed to a local car shop who said that discovered that the half shafts were shot as well as the clutch plate. I had them replace the entire clutch and the two half shafts. All in all, they charged me $1000. *sighs* I find now that I know someone who could have done the work for hundreds less.

Plus...my shifter appears to be on backwards. Now 2nd and 4th gear are about where neutral used to be. First gear is VERY far forward. So far forward, the leather skirt around teh shifter no longer makes contact with the shift knob when in 1st or 3rd. Other than that, it drives real nice now. I'm going to take it back to them to fix the shifter..

Now that's a ripoff...the clutch job is around 400 +80-150 for clutch kit on average and the axles should have been $250 including axles...
