Will a Vtec D16Y8 head bolt right onto a D16Y7 block?, I've always wanted to go Vtec since I got the car, but I want to know if the head of a Y8 will bolt right in, and if not, what's the proper procedure to get it all together.

Thanks for the link!, after reading all that I got one question though, What would be the correct timing belt to use for this mini-me, the Y8 belt?

your current belt is actually the same size as the y8 belt, tooth count and all. i used to be on the mini me bandwagon. nice thing about it is the sohc vtec cams are cheaper than non vtec sohc cams. although i prefer now to stay non vtec.

when you say the vtec heads, are you only talking about the piston heads? What about the actual v tec system? I have a D16Y7 - what kind of power gains in hp from changing to the heads you mentioned? Where can I get those from and what parts would I need specifically....

A mini-me swap consists of swapping your cylinder head with a v-tec cylinder head, usually the z6 or y8, depending on your future plans for the car. Also swapping the computer and running a few wires to the v-tec solenoid and a few other minor details.

I'm pretty sure the belt you use depends on which head your swapping in. on the d15b8 block with the z6 head, I used the z6 belt. But I can't guarantee that will work for all the swaps.

OK....If I get D16Y8 cylinder heads, the vtec solenoid, wiring and an intake manifold from an EX - what are the power gains? approx? know any where I can get Y8 heads from? ANything else I need?

Y7- 106@6200 103@4600
Y8- 127@6600 107@5500

That would be the difference. Get the Y8 headgasket also. Parts can be had from local junkyards or ebay. Ebay will probably be cheaper.

Along with the added 20-30 hp you get, the swap will boost your compression. Get the y8 gasket and remove the center piece for a little bit of added compression. Your going to need head bolts, and you should do the valve cover and intake manifold gasket as well. You might need a distributor, i'm pretty sure the non v-tec dizzy's dont work with the v-tec's. It didnt with mine at least.

That sounds like an attactive proposition....coupled with a full new cat back and long ram intake I should have about 150hp? The mini me should be less than £500 then I guess. Engine swap and turbos seem like a whole load of work + labour. Better off buying an evo 7 or sumthin nxt yr (!). I need the power..."I don't have the powerrr captain!!"

In summary I need:
Y8 heads
Y8 ECU
Y8 vtec solenoid + wiring
Y8 intake manifold
Y8 distributor
Y8 gasket

Is this the fianl list? ANything missing? If not....I'm going to begin shopping + find labour charges(!). Unless you belive I can do it in my front yard?

You forgot the head bolts and the gaskets and the correct timing belt, and I would recommend changing the water pump while it's all apart... The hardest part that I ran into was getting the bolt for the crankshaft pulley off, you may want to take you car to a shop and have them get it free for you before you start. And I did mine on the side of my street... It's a one way so I had to push the car to the other side every other damn night... lol. But It's definitely a fun job, if your mechanically inclined, I'd say go for it.

you will probably be up around 135 if you dont get the car tuned for the bolt ons... You are gonna need some other things to get up to 150hp n/a

might I be better off swapping for a 1.6 vti dohc? Isn't it a direct bolt on?

The only reason to keep a Y8 is for fuel economy. Otherwise, you have a ton of options. Search around.

ok - so im not going to get the power I want with a Y8 conversion....I need a DOHC or a turbo - which is better? turbo converon or engine swap? which is the best engine swap for my car, in terms of ease and reliablity? B18C? B16A? I want at least 160hp - I ave about £1000 to spare (approx $1700) inc labour....

Ideas anyone? I have a D15Y05 in a yr 2000 Civic Sport, coupe

IDEAS!!! and please be specific....brands, engine codes etc - thanks!

i have a question about this i have a 94 block stock internals with a 99 sohc v-tech head. now is this the same as what you are all talking about and if so what type of compression with this run with this set up.?

yea that's a mini me.

copied straight from mini-me DIY thread:
"It is widely believed that this combination, with a thin D16Y8 head gasket, will produce a near 11:1 CR. However, after calculating the compression using the d-series compression calculator, I only came up with 10.1:1."

I'm not exactly sure when you take those into account.

I might not be right on this, but I don't think bolt-ons would affect the CR.
