Okay so I am thinking about beefing up my SOHC Vtec D16Y8 engine
Some of you might ask why dont I just do a swap B16/B18 right? Well honestly I liek the D-series, jsut that I dont know much abotu them like Marty does lol.
I spent two hours looking up and down on the forums and it seems like a lot of people are saying a turbo boost D series is pretty quick, now is that all it needs besides the other minor upgrades?

What are your goals with the car, do you have a hp goal, a budget?
Marty

BTW thanks, I dont know near enough but it's good to be informed and experienced on certain subjects.

throw some pistons and rods in that motor and run like 15lbs of boost with the propure tune and fuel and your car will be screaming down the streets faster than you could of admagined

At first I was saving money up for a B16A or even a B18B, but as tiem went on I somehow just turned to love the D series more and more lol, my budget as of right now is unknown lol, but my goals are to be able to have drivable car, you know drive normally and dont need to worry about things, btu at the same time smoking DOHCS on the streets lol
And I at least want a 200HP goal or more.

If you can give me a estimate of a budget I can get you what you want.

I am going to be putting a turbo on my y8. I am using the edelbrock kit, and while I am at it I decided to get valve springs, retainers, a fresh rebuild, and fuel pump and rail. That alone will give me near 200 whp, the edelbrock kit on a stock y8 gives you 172 whp and 141 ft./lbs. at the wheels. That is pretty impressive, and it is the most complete kit on the market. It runs around 3300, but I think it is worth it, hell, it even comes with a new I/M. Greddy makes a good kit, but then you have to go get an intercooler, and the price comes out about the same. Keep looking up stuff, I mean I don't know everything about cars, just enough to fix them up. Let me know how you go about your setup, and if you can, send pics when you get it done. BTW, Marty, I am looking for around 200 whp, what do you think I should get?

well i know martys gunna suggest this but i beat him to it
dont get a kit. peice one together yourself. you can get much more power for a lot less money...espcially if you're budgeting for an eldebrock kit. search ebay for parts. theres a shopping list in the DIY Drivetrain section.

well then marty I guess my budget as right right now would be around 2000-2500
Is that with a professional installation, Or can you save the 5-700$ and do it yourself.

if you seriously had your eyes set on the edelbrock kit then i would get it. its a damn good kit and you get what you pay for....:D:D:D

nope i dont trust the shops here at where i live lol
Marty

$2000 to $2500 I honestly suggest a kit. Not that I am being lazy or changing my ways but with no disrespect ment if you are just now getting into all of this for the first time and you only want 200 to 225whp then I dont suggest a person that dont know all the ins and outs of turboing to go on a buying spree for a custom setup.

Honestly that is hard to beat simple as that.

I've also heard about the oil pan crap whats that all about? DRilling a oil line in the oil pan?
Marty
04-14-2006, 01:44 AM
It is the return line for your turbo. Oil goes into the turbo to lube the berrings that the wheel spins on then exits through a tube and into your oil pan to be filtered and cooled with the rest of your oil
Nail I3unny

its not that hard to drill the oil pan. you just need to make sure you drill it above the oil level. its not hard.

I have the exact same engine...and im only 16 but i check stuff out thoroughly, turbokits.com has a great selection of turbos for our engine and most of them make over 200 hp with just the turbo, put some new pistons and connecting rods in that, bump up the boost and wow, but then again i dont kno much

Thanks, I hope to be puttin a turbo kit on my car as soon as possible, then pistons etc. i figured it better to just stick with my engine than swap to a b, as you said it is the most over rated swap in history haha, What do u think I can push my engine to?
Marty
04-15-2006, 02:19 AM
What engine do you have? I also want to clear one thing up, I think the B16 is one of the most overrated swaps in history but I am a fan of the B20's and B18's.

04-15-2006, 02:31 AM
Allright that is good to know, I got a D16Y8 in my 1996 Civic Si or Ex. Would u reccomend swapping with a different engine say a H series or should i be sticking to a turbo for the d series engine. Iv heard some people say they like the feel of the SOHC while others love the DOHC, never got to drive a DOHC so would never know.
Marty
04-15-2006, 02:35 AM
Main thing first is what are your goals with the car and how much are you looking to spend in the end.
thedougler
04-15-2006, 02:47 AM
Hmmm, not really sure about the whole price thing but I was thinking around 12 psi 250hp+ more the better. Drivable but not expected to last forever. I like the idea of a boost controller very much.
Marty
04-15-2006, 03:08 AM
Man it is not that easy, to be honest you need a goal....be it 1/4 mile times, hp levels, drive-ability, or something. You never want to start a project with out a goal to reach. Also a thing to think about is that a civic with 200 to 225whp is a damn quick car and is really fun to have. I mean it is all fun and cool to want monster numbers and killer track times but you get to a point and atleast to me it is nolonger fun on the street. I say if you want a very fun car with reliability and you are willing to spend around $2500 I say look into a turbonetics or edelbrock turbo kit and invest about $500 more into a dyno session with a good tuner and let them work their magic.

can i sneak in a quick question here?
ORIGINAL: Marty
but I am a fan of the B20's and B18's.
are the B20s open or closed deck?
thedougler
04-15-2006, 04:06 PM
No idea, Thanks marty i was looking a turbonetics, what do u think i shoul be able to get it for? And i live in Saskatchewan so I'll prob head to edmonton or somethign for the tuning session, any one know a good tuner out there?
My goal is a low thirteen, high 12 second car, id like it at least 210hp+, but still be able to drive it around town...does this help?

well that sucks, i post a reply and then no more than a class period change. i find this other post. It was pretty helpful, i see you guys are really into the turbo and stuff. I mean, is there a way you can beef up a d series without turbo?? i mean, just simply something small...I wanna learn about turbo stuff, but right now i dont have the money. So my budget isnt near the other guys' 2000+ so....something a little smaller :D
