So my dad just moved to japan and he's been telling me about all the different cars and stuff he's seeing over there ... anyways so he's been telling me how he thinks he might get an older nissan skyline to drive around there and that he could get one CHEAP so i was just wondering is it even possible to register an older skyline here in the states or is it just to much trouble. Because if you can i think i might have to save up.

Oh yeah i live in CO if that helps

i don't think that it would be too hard. if it passes the emissions test.

you can register any skyline unless it is a R34 GTR

its possible but i think it depends on what type skyline u bring over(R34 or R32) one of them u can make legal over here and the other u cant for some reason but i dunno which it is...and ya skylines are pretty damn cheap and EXTREMELY common over there. my friend goes there every year and tells me how he sees skylines everywhere. he saw one down the street from where his family lives in japan that was forsale for a couple grand he really wanted to buy it but shipping it over would cost some maaaajor $$$.

yeah i'm heading out to japan to visit my dad for christmas and if i could save up enough to get one while i'm there ... i definetly will haha. I'm thinking around a 1990 R32 ... Right now i'm just trying to figure out how much it would cost me to
1. Get the car
2. Get it over here
3. Registration and Insurance
(If anyone wants to take a stab at any of these numbers go for it)

Speaking of insurance how would you insure a foreign car ... i just went to progressive.com to see how much insurance would be and their wasn't a listing for skyline? do you just put it in as a kit car?

Haha my dad was talking to me and said "Alot of the kids are into that drifting thing out here and their cars are pretty cool ... sometimes i'll see them drifting through intersections its pretty cool"

Only R33 Skylines are eligible to be imported into the US. Sorry

However if you can afford an R33 it would cost you roughly 15k to take care of the whole thing.

the reason you can only bring the r33 over is cause, the r34 has windows theat shatter when hit with even a peble, plus it is way to expencive, and to much of a hassle, that is what ive heard. but a friend did import a teggy, and it only costed him like 2k to ship it from there to alaska so...

Yep 15k is about right. My buddy was going to try to get stationed in Japan and I helped him buy his camaro a couple of years ago so he said if i wanted he could look for a skyline for me and get it shipped back on a military ship for free. Still was going to be lke 9-11k for me to get it street legal. You can also get it registered for track ONLY which is alot cheaper but if a cop ever pulls you over on the street and see its track use only they WILL crush the car no matter what.

I dont know how much you're looking to spend.. But I know of a dude selling an absolutely SICK R33, that is already here, and requires (i think) 15-18 grand to make it street legal.

Yeah i didn't realize how much it would cost or how long the process takes haha ... i thought it would probably be around 8-10k. At a price tag of 15 grand i'd rather take that money and put it in a down payment for a brand new evo or something similar.

Even though RHD would be sweet!

WHen I am not going to college I live and work in Japan. I live in a city called Kumamoto on the west island called kyushu. I rode in my buddy's r34 skyline a couple years ago and i was blown away.. it is 8000 to ship it to america and what you should do is do all of your requirements for import in japan and you will save a butt load of money. Depending on where you go you will save... on the mainland (honshu island) the Kyoto/Osaka area has a major city called Amagasaki-shi and that would be a sick place to get EVERYTHING. Kumamoto is big with mountain drifting (where it originated) and especially in the Nagasaki/Isahaya area.. tons of mountains. What does your dad do in Japan? I went to high school in Nagoya and then lived on Kyushu for 2 years as a missionary and then worked as a translator around the country and then taught english there until education called and went back to the states!

This is a little off-topic but hey this is the off-topic forum.

This is the car that my dad currently drives in Japan ... I rag on him pretty hard about it because who in their right mind would buy a toyota (van) spacio in Japan! with all the other cheap alternatives available ... oh well

But like i said he said he might get like a 1990 skyline for fun ... hopefully he gets it before christmas when i get out there

Yeah i noticied you guys were talking about that ... My Dad used to be but he got out and started working as a DOD Contractor and I don't know if working as a DOD Contractor would give the discount but i'm definetly gonna ask my dad.

you cant bring an R34 over here anymore. I dont know how many times that needs to be said. The only model you can bring over now is the R33, so dont bother looking for any other skyline ;)

it would be really really expensive. My father was in the army and my family and I were stationed in Seoul, South Korea. Never got to live in Japan only switch planes in Toyko. But the miltary will not ship your car for free or for a discount for official use only and if your father did have a car shipped from the states then u will not be able to ship one back (with the miltary), and switching it over to US domestic specs would be a lot of money! When the stock market crashed in Korea in around 1997 the exhchange rate was like 1 dollar to like 2000 won (appx 2k) so army people were buying new cars on the korea economy for basically 1/2 price and the couldnt ship em back because of the crazy amount to convert. I looked in to shipping and it would cost over 5k to ship from SK. I did occasionally see Skylines in Seoul, a lot cheaper to ship a car from Japan to Korea and similiar specs.

Enjoy ur trip, like i said i've only been in Narita but things in Japan are really expensive like 5 bucks for a little soda and stuff and it weird everythings backwards I kept trying to get on the left side of the escalotors and moving sides walk

You can bring all Skylines over exept for the R34's. R33's, R32's, Skyline GT-S's, Skyline GT-M's all are fair game. the R34's are off limits though as the only company that was able to bring them over got shut down by the government and the owner got charged with tax evasion and a few other things i can not remember.

Motorex owner jailed, R32 and R34 legalization rescinded
Monday, March 13, 2006
Posted by: AZhitman
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the owner of Motorex, Nanahoshi Hiroaki, 33, was arrested Thursday and booked into the L.A. County Jail. He is being held on $1 Million bail.

Booking Details

Hiroaki's initial appearance is scheduled for Wednesday of this week.

Hiroaki and Motorex came to the recognition of Nissan enthusiasts in the US as they became the only Registered Importer legally authorized to legalize Skylines for US use. As Motorex was able to comply with stringent US crash-testing requirements, they petitioned the courts to protect their interest in the Skyline market by "locking out" other would-be importers from the list of necessary modifications.

Not only did this give Motorex a corner on the market for legal Skylines, it also allowed them to command a premium price for each legalized car. Motorex-prepped Skylines can fetch upwards of $50,000. While making loads of money, Motorex also made loads of enemies.

According to sources, the lease to the Motorex facility has been overdue for months, and is now locked out by the landlord.

The US Department of Transportation has offically rescinded importation eligibility for both the R32 and R34 Skylines, only 96-98 R33 Skylines are still eligible to be imported.

attempted extortion, attempted kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon (a taser). He is also facing civil suits from disgruntled GT-R owners (and would be owners) and possible jail time in other unrelated charges.

The Department of Transportation has rescinded the importation of all Skyline GT-Rs with the exception of the '96-98 R33 models.

If hollywood gets a hold of this I would love to see a real life movie made from it. "Motorex : The Rise and Fall of Godzilla" or some sh t. lol

That is GT-R's not Skylines. Not all Skylines are GTR's. The GTR badge is more so a suspension, drive terrain upgrade(LSD's center diff's, body cladding) than they are actual performance. You can get a non-gtr R33 with a RB26DETT in it.

Man that sucks, and they are such nice cars.
Why do they have to go through all that testing on each car? Cant they test one car, and then make the same changes to every other car? (dont know if it made sence)
