Header, Intake, & Exhaust - Exhaust do-it-yourself replacement advice

All,

Have a 1999 Civic EX. Hole in exhaust pipe. It's the pipe that's in-between the two mufflers. Or, I assume that there are 2 mufflers. There's the converter, a pipe, a muffler-looking-thing, a longer pipe (which has the hole), and then the muffler at the rear of the car.

I was wondering:

1) Is it possible to replace just this pipe?
2) Is this a do-it-yourself job, or is specialized equipment required?
3) Are there stainless exhaust systems out there that are essentially stock replacements? By that, I mean that I'd want something more or less OEM, and very quiet, NOT a "performance" system that makes things loud, etc.

Advice?

Thanks!

If you wanted to replace only that pipe, you would need to cut and weld another one in or get a sort of muffler wrap thing at autozone and do it yourself if you want. you can also just replace the whole intermediate pipe and that costs about $70 and you may be able to do that if you know how to use a ratchet... i don't know about the stock stainless systems - maybe someone else may but i can't find one.

I think if you called the Catalytic [sp?] converter a "muffler-looking-thing" then I don't think you should try it...

he called the cat converter Ok, it was the resonator that he did not know the name of.
and at least he was right about it being "muffler looking".

before I bought my civic, my old '93 eagle summit's(google it) catalytic converter caught on fire.

Its not tough at all. Last time I installed one I just spent the $75 it cost to install instead of going throuhg the hassle. It's a simple 1 hour job for someone with a lift.
