Is it bad to shift a Civic with an auto tranny manually once in a while. I got a four speed auto here, and I currently do not have the cash for a swap. Once in a while I shift it manully. Is the bad for the tranny in any way? Also, would a tranny cooler help?
Thanks in advance!
Andrey

how do you shift an auto like a manual?

not really, but its absolutley pointless... since the only thing D3 and 2 do is just keep the tranny from going up gears. When you depress the accelerator hard enough your car automatically drops a gear for pickup.

Doing so could have been useful on a dodge...it even compression breaks in 1,2,3...but dodge does shift at 6K cuz its ovEr the red line a bit. And I've never driven an auto civic.

Here's how you shift an auto like a many: You need RPM's for speed and torque, when you have the transmission in D4 it will shift at lower RPM's then if you were to shift it manually your self. Basically you let the rpm's get up to like 6700 and shift. If in D4, it will shift under that. Besieds, I cant go faster than like 90 MPH when Im in 4D.

I never really had a long or a good road to top out at, but I can't get the rpm's when im in 4D, I usually have it in 3D, hamer it down so it down shifts in to second, then I get my rpm's. I got up to 104 in 3D once, and that was on a bumpy road, not a freeway. There we have it.

If you keep it floored, it should shift right about at redline while it's in D4.

Yeah, I just got my next car, and I'm rockin' the 4-speed hardcore.

Ok, so basically the bottom line is that shifting a 4speed auto manually is not bad for the tranny in any way right? Every body agree?

Ive done a few of those by accident.... you get so used to the rev limiter and once you slip it, its a very scary wake up call.

Very well, gentlemen, thank you for your input.

like remington said it would be pointless to shift it like a manual cause it only goes down to D2. So the question is can buy a new shifter, like found in a beefed up camaro, so you would have D1 - D4. I also would love to have a manual, but as money has it, its not happenin. Plus I would have to spend mad money on labor, I wouldnt know where to begin to swap out a tranny...

tman, Im not sure if I understand your question/comment, but as far as a shifter goes, I have a type R on the shifting column if you know what I mean.

the ironic part is that its cheaper just to buy a manual car

You mean like shirt the small sheet as you leave telling everyone watching nothing you needed thanks anyway?;)

That is damn honest considering the prices they put on the sh*t you do need and try to pay for.

Well sh*t they figure if it fits in the bag cant be that important. Should see the eagle rods I found of a trashed teg. Yeah I yanked em and put em in my pockets. Also walked around seeing what the previous owners have left behind...matching 7.5 LCD screens built into sunvisors(Lexus) Held em together (tightly) and payed 5 bucks. They take the previous owner(whomever) andI say take them.

I think they're right about buying a car with a manual would be cheaper. Plus you wouldn't have to deal with all the AT wiring issues and the AT guage cluster.... All of that. You could easily sell your car and buy a manual one! You can find pretty good deals if you look hard. My suggestion is that you look hard while you still have it, and if someone is desperate to get rid of it (if they're in debt or something) then you can make them a pretty low offer and they'll jump at it. Then just sell your car if you want to. I got my 94EX coupe for just a little over $2 thousand after a full tune up with new water pump and timimg belt, 17 inch wheels and tires, exhaust, headers, strut tower brace, and high flow air filter.

It shouldn't hurt it too bad as long as you lift your foot off the gas (as you would in a manual) when you shift. Otherwise, your torque converter will hate you.

Otherwise, your torque converter will hate you.

...But you should already be hating it too... ;)
