So, what is everybody running in their cars?

Headunit? Amps? Speakers? Subs?

Me? I've got an Alpine CDA-9815 with an Alpine 5 channel amp (50 x4 + 150x1)powering my main speakers and sub. My front speakers are Alpine Type-R components, rear speakers are Boston Acoutics RM9s. For a sub I'm running an Alpine Type-R 12 at 2 ohm.

Also, for plenty of power I've got an Optima Battery and a Phoenix Gold 1 farad capacitor.

Eventually I plan to replace all speakers with Focal Polyglass 6.5" components and their 11" sub. Also, I intend to upgrade the amp to Zapco's Reference 350.2 (100x2) for the front speakers, Reference 200.2 (50x2) for the rear speakers, and Reference 500.1 for the subwoofer.
<edited><editID>outsider</editID><editDate>38101.557974537</editDate></edited>

Mine is still stock which is pretty much OK with me for now.

I've got other stuff I'll spend the money on.

2way radio etc.

But the bottom has such a muddy sound,

what is recommended to just (on a budget) clean up the bass.

I don't need to dim the lights, but I do want a cleaner bass line.

No one I've found has a simple amp/box combo that is worth anything.

JCW has an amp/tube combo, but I'll bet they'll be just as bad as the stock. Or worse !

iNTRuDeR-

I would avoid any/all of the "bass tubes" if you want clean sound. They make noise, but not good noise.

as for adding an amp/sub setup to you existing system, I am not sure how to do that. What you could do is buy an aftermarket headunit with preouts to run to an amp. Then get a small monoblock amp and a basic sub. I have no idea what your budget is, so I can't really give many suggestions other than talking to a car audio shop. Many shops have package deals.

Good idea,

I tend to avoid the local shops only due to inexperience.

But they are a good source of info.

Yeah, I'd just like it to sound a bit cleaner, but don't have the bugdet for (and don't reallly want) to $pend a bunch to get the real bass,

just cleaner.

Well, I am kinda poor so I still got alot of work to do, so I just have a systems that works... its a kenwood mp3 deck, kenwood 220 wat 3 ways all the way around(4 at 6.5) and I am running a rockford 400 watt punch amp with an alpine typeR 12 inch sub in a closed box. Some day it will all be custome, I promise...

outsider is right, everyone has to start off somewhere. Intially, I purchased what I could afford at the time (not very good brands) but I wanted something that was better than stock. Now, I research thoroughly to see what is good and what isn't.

ghetto, seems like you have a nice setup and I can imagine how hard that Type R 12 must hit with 400 watts being powered to it.

how do you like those Zapco amps? I've been looking at their Reference series.

I just switched from a stock head unit to an Alpine head, two 10 inch JL Audio subs in a base box, Alipne 6 CD changer, Polk Audio Tweets and a 600 watt amp (I can't remember the brand). I want two more tweets and a EQ.

05-06-2004, 12:31 PM
ntx-

why do you want so much tweeter?

I've got an insane amount of bass even with the tweets i have. I don't want it to sound all high, but i do want to be able to even the sound out a little more. I'm sure a crossover or a eq would help....

you think more tweets is a bad idea?

slim11420
05-06-2004, 03:48 PM
damn ntx...2 more tweets is gonna be ear piercing loud...your sh*t will be screamin....you should check into some 6.5 for some good mid range bass. it will kinda smooth everything out.
outsider
05-06-2004, 05:01 PM
ntx-

to back up what slim said, 2 more tweeters is going to give you too much high end. If the bass is overpowering your system, then turn down the bass.

Does your headunit have a subwoofer level control? Also, does the amp running the subs have a Gain or Bass EQ? If the amp does have one of these, then you can use that to equalize your lows with your highs.

Also, if your amps have built in crossovers, then set the High-Pass Crossover and Low-Pass crossover to the same setting. This will send the lows to the subs and the highs to the main speakers.

The bass is at zero. I need to check the amp to see if it's adjustable. I think i do need some new interior speakers.
outsider
05-06-2004, 09:08 PM
ntx-

have you replaced all your speakers or just the front?

Also, how much power (RMSwatts)are you running to your main speakers? How much to your subs?

My main speakers are all stock with no extra power going to them. I wanted to swap them out and put a small amp on them but at the time it was kinda pricey, plus I didn't want the car to be all stereo. All 600 Watts are to the subs. I've been slippin when it comes to getting my sound straightend out.
outsider
05-07-2004, 11:30 AM
In that case, one reason you're getting so much bass is because your main speakers are running full range- 20hz-20khz. Typically it is best to run frequencies below 60hz to your subs and frequencies above 60hz to your main speakers. Despite what spec sheets will tell you, most full range speakerscando below 60hz accurately.

Since your speakers are reproducing all frequencies (and most likely doing a poor job on everything below 60hz) you have 6 speakers doing what only 2 should be doing.

I hope this helps you out.

You recomend a crossover?
outsider
05-07-2004, 03:28 PM
A crossover will help. The only problem with that as the solution is that you'd have to put it somewhere inbetween the headunit and the speakers. I don't know of a crossover that would be that simple.

A better solution would be to get a 4 channel amp with a built in crossover. As far as I know all amps have built in crossovers.

What kind of headunit do you have? How many pre-outs does it have?

The head is an Alpine TDM-7582. I think it only has one set of pre-outs.

http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/d1/d0/Alpine_TDM_7582_In_Dash_Cassette_Receiver_w__M_Bus _CD_Changer_Controls___TDM7582.JPG border=

outsider
05-07-2004, 04:54 PM
I think you're right. I'm pretty sure the Alpine TDM only has 1 preout. That being the case, see if you can find a 4 channel amp that has speaker level inputs. That way you can get signal from the headunit to the amp, and then from the amp to the speakers. Alpine's MRV-F340 will work this way.
Does Alpine make good amps? Someone told me they dont.
outsider
05-07-2004, 07:08 PM
I've owned 3 Alpine amps and they've all worked very well. But, stick with their V-12 line, avoid the V-Power. Even though the V-Power are much better than previous lower end Alpine amps, they aren't as good as the V-12s.

If you don't want Alpine, then take a look at JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Zapco. There are some others, as well, but I can't think of them. Phoenix Gold used to make some really nice amps, but I have only negative remarks about their new for 2004products. The stereo shop I deal with actually dumped the entire PG line.

Ever heard of Koiiler Amps?

outsider
05-12-2004, 12:38 AM
no, I've never heard of Koiiler. Do you know where they came from? Are they brand new on the market? Have you seen them somewhere?
I don't know anything about them but thats what's in my car now. It works cool but i just never heard of it before (audio store recomended it so I bought it)

05-12-2004, 03:50 PM
What is the price range of their products? I've got a copy of Car Audio and Electronics 2004 Directory which is supposed to have everymanufacturer in it, butthey aren't listed. Any idea how long they've been around?

Also, for my own curiousity, who told you that Alpine amps are no good?

This is their website (http://www.koiiler.com/ target=). I'd never heard of them at all. I don't know how long they've been around or what they're reputation is.

My first choice for an amp was Alpine since ialready hadthe head unit and cd changer. My brother was the one that told me not to buy an Alpine. He said they're over priced and not as good as other brands out there.

outsider
05-12-2004, 05:27 PM
Well, it sounds like you've had good luck with Koiiler. If you like them so far,I saystick with them.

As far as Alpine amps go, your brother is half right: you can get better. But, to get better you usually have to pay more. Like Phoenix Gold's Titanium line was better, but alwayscost more. Zapco's Competition line is better, but you're looking atdouble the price, or more. However, Zapco's Reference line has a similar price range and are a littlenicer IMO. They're smaller, too.

Hello everyone. I just bought a '94 Ex that's in great condition...it's even the discontinued "Aztec Green." Sadly enough, the right speaker is blown. Being someone who knows nothing about cars, let alone the electronics that go in them, I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on how to begin my upgrade from stock speakers. Will any brand work? And what size will fit in a civic? Thanks for your help!

I've got 2 5 1/2 Pioneer speakers up front, 2 4x6's in the rear deck, and 2 12" IMPP Premiers in the trunk in a custom ported box. Alpine Type-S 1042D @ 2 ohm
Alpine M350-mono
Alpine F345 4/3/2
I was running the 4 channel to the sub and the fronts and running the deck on the rears. Sound was great. I got a hair up my arse and decided to get the mono amp to run the sub and the 4 channel on the front and rear. Sound seems to have suffered. My Sub sounds a bit dull now not a lot of punch just a little too basey and full range. I'm not sure if i am happy with the 170A's. I will be considering some separates in the rear now. I am also adjusting the crossover setting gain/filter. I am close to a really good thing and it is only an adjustment or two away.
I'll be listening to Bostons, MB Quarts and some others for the rears if i deside to change them out.

believe it or not the new sony xplod line is cheap and hits hard and clean. i wouldnt recomend it for competition but i would for what you want. i bought a 12" sony xplod speaker and sony xplod 444 watt amp both for 150.00 at walmart. you aint gon find new stereo equip cheaper than that. one warning, DO NOT use a walmart box. have one custom built or pre built to the specs of the speaker. i believe u need 1 cubic foot of airspace, and a ported box makes all the difference in the world on that speaker. if you are handy with wood and know basic geometry u can build it yourself. the great thing about hatchbacks (i'm driving a 91 civic dx) is bass goes alot further in them. my single 12" sony bangs way harder in my hatch than my partners 2 10" JL's in his blazer. his was professionally installed, mine is all home installed. my highs are 2 pawn shop 4x6's in the back custom install since 91 dx only came factory with 2 door speakers, plus the 2 door speakers i just mentioned. the door speakers are factory and the highs are unbelievable still, they make your ears ring with the volume on 25. the bass sucks on them but i turn the bass all the way off on the head unit and up on the 12. my head unit is a jvc, i picked it up for 150 with remote and detatchable face. i have been happy with it. it is not glamorous, but never skips and has excellent playback quality.

hey i was looking at a kenwood amp KAC-7201 and i already own a twin 10" sub manufactured by Boschmann. just wondering would it sound good since i have a 2003 civic and has all factory installed speakers and headunits.
Wat else would i need apart from amps to make it sound good.
Kind of a noobie when it comes to car audio.

I am running a Pioneer head unit the old one that had the dolpins swimming and stonehedge screensaver. Factory replacement infinities, Pioneer 2 channel amp, also an Alpine 4 channel amp for mids and highs the Pioneer 2 channel runs the 2 MTX Thunderpro subs i have and i got a 1 Farad Capacitor for extra comfort in case or headlight dimming and take any stress of the car battery. Thinking about switching from two 10 inch subs to 3 or 4 8 inch subs.

Okay, before I got my 2004 Honda Civic LX Coupe (two door), I used to a Volvo 940 turbo, 1991. It was becoming a piece, though, always dying. The turbo made it fun though. Anyway, I put a system in it, over a couple of months (money). I had a pioneer headunit (40x4 watts). Replaced the two rear speakers with pioneer (I blew one, they were factory). I left the front two (6") factory. Then I put in two pioneer 6x9's and ran a 200 watt MTX thunder amp to them, so as not to drain the headunit too much. I also had a 1000 watt pyramid amp (it sucked) with two legacy 12" subs. They blew though, so I got some cheap wal-mart subs. They worked anyway. I got a lot of good high and low end sound with all this. Best part, all self-installed after i bought all the parts. It was nice after everything. I only messed up once on the install and I didn't blow anything. I needed a powercap, though. Anyway, long story short, car destroyed in hurricane.
So now i have the honda. This is planned: run 4 gauge wire in a splitter, run 8 gauge out of it. Put in two 760 watt pioneer amps to run to two 12 in" 1000 watt pioneer subs in separate boxes with a powercap. Inside, replace the factory 6x9's with 5-way pioneers. Replace the front with 2 or 3-way pioneers. Then replace the headunit with a nice pioneer headunit (i have it picked out, don't know the type and such). Yeah, i like pioneer, go all one brand. All self-installed. It will be nice.

All the stuff outta the explorer is being glassed into the civic as we speak:
Headunit: Alpine IVA-W200
Speakers: JL ZR650CSi's in front, JL TR650CXi's in the rear
Sub: JL 12W7
Amps: Custom Chromed JL 1000/1 and 450/4
Interconnects: JL 18 foot blue series RCA's
Power: Rockford 0 Gauge wire, 2 Stinger batterys
Cleanup: Rockford 3sixty.2 and AudioControl Epic 150
Extras: Alpine Bluetooth Add on and full speed ipod adapter
Sounded kick ass in the explorer, had a different headunit though, wanted to do something with bluetooth, and the D310 didn't have it, so i had to sell it, plus it didn't have the highspeed ipod, it just had the old KCA-420i hookup instead of the 422. Deff cant wait to hear it in the hatch though, should be pretty brutal, but im more about sound quality then just bein loud.

the headunit is a JVC, dont know the model number but its the one with the 3 inch dvd screen in it. i have 2-12 sony xplode subs rated at 1200 watts a piece hooked up to a 1000 watt sony xplode amp. repainted the amp blue to match interior. also have 3 audiobahn dub edition 6*9's. all of this is in the trunk in what i hope is a sweet setup. workin on it off an on. dont have any sound in the car because all of the wiring was gutted inside the car, example, all of the wired for the doors in now ran into the middle console. so i just ran everything in the back. im flippin two of the 6*9 over in the back so u see the nice chrome backing to em, you see people with 10's or 12's flipped, thought it would be different to see 6*9's like that too. i get pics up when its done.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e250/addiction2bass/NEW%2099%20Civic%20EX/New%20sub%20box/newRE10box007.jpg
and soon to build a box for my new setup which i already have in my new equipment just have to build a box and trunk setup and wire in my new amp
sub is a REaudio SX 12inch sub, powered with a ORION D2400. 1200watts rms along with the box ported also tuned at 34hz....
should take me awhile to build my trunk setup i want.
i plan on spending quite a bit of time on it. last few times i spent my time on my system i think they turn out great. so far my personal favorite is my towncar setup i built. spent about a week straight on it!
only thing i didnt work out was the swapable port.

short little video..... BUT some sounds dont sound like that! thats just the way my camera picked it up.... tho i do still have alittle bit of fine tunning to do on the amp.
http://s40.photobucket.com/albums/e250/addiction2bass/NEW%2099%20Civic%20EX/?action=view¤t=vidOrionSX038.flv
not bad so far ;) trying to let the sub break in for alittle while before i realy crank it up, plus still have alittle fine tuning to do. would be easier to tune if my amp was towards the rear trunk but my crapy wires arent long enough so i have to extend them :(
crapy cheap amplifier kit! wish i waited for the weekend and went to the flea market! now i gotta replace it all and replace it with my new stuff, which is the brown or black color to hide the wires more! guess ill use my old short power wire for the ground directly to the battery.
i think i got all the wire i need now..... gonna use 8gauge wire for my speaker wires, and good 4gauge wires the rest of the way around.
tho next thing to do is give my radio main power from the battery cause now it fights for power with my amp. also replace factory ground cables with 0gauge cabling that i had on my truck. ;)

Infinity Reference 4's in front and 6.5's in custom mounts in the rear.
Kicker amp under the driver's seat, I can't remember the model #, but I think it makes about 150Wx1 RMS.
2 250W 8" Boss Riot RT-8 Subs, 90dB Sens. in 3/4" MDF box I made myself with a 3" tuned port.
Well that's about all I've got for now. And yes, it's all very well bolted down in all sorts of funny places. I take the faceplate and the XM reciever with me whenever I'm not in the car as well.

I just bought a 99 civic Ex and joined this forum to learn more about them. One of the best parts of the car is the stereo. Although these were not my choice, i happen to like the way they sound and perform. The head unit is a Kenwood Exceleon 4.5v preamp, an MTX Thunder 700watt amp powering 4- 12" MTX subs(not sure on the model). I just purchased 6.5" Alpine Type R components for the front and 6x9" Alpine Type R's for the back, and they sound AMAZING! I was looking at a 4ch Exceleon amp to give them the extra power they want, but $ plays a small factor in why i havn't purchased it yet, that and there is absolutly NO room in the trunk or anywhere else for it. I'm gonna have to get creative on that one.

i just wanted to say since i've seen all these sony xplods.. is the only thing sony xplod makes that is good is the head unit and the 6 x 9's are ok. not trying to talk bad just saying .. but anyways i have :
head unit: sony xplod cdx gt-200
front speakers: 6.5" jvc
rear speakers: 6.5" memphis
Amplifier: 18001d t audiobahn amp, which is a true 1800 watt amp. meaning 1800 watts continous.. running 4 gauge wire btw
subs: 3 10" american bass in a custom built ported box. these are some thick subs not any thin weak ones..

Subs : 3 12" type-r 1242d series - 500rms a peice
Amps : alpine MRD-M605, HIFONICS Bxi 1206D- alpine pushes 600rms and hifonics runs 1200 rms
Speakers : 4, 6.5 rockford fosgate power series - about 60 rms per but dont really use them for bass
Head Unit : Pioneer AVIC-N2 in-dash head unit - awesome in dash lol seeing how i got it for 500 brand new
so i'm running a total of 1,500 rms of type r power!! i had to dynamat probably 60% of the trunk and 50% of the roof so it wouldnt rattle so much but you should feel the power of them.

mmm...installs are sex.
2ga wire fused 5 inches from battery with a 150amp fuse, split at 4 way fuse block to 2 8ga wires with 80amp fuse(Incase i decided to add amps later)
Both amplifiers are MTX 2301s bridged running to two mtx thunder 7500s dvcs in a slotted box.
Door speakers = sony xplod(model number unavail. although theyve been discontinued)
Rear deck = mtx(also discontinued)
Deck = I have my new deck sitting in alaska, and my old deck that came with the car(although its aftermarket). The car is in florida right now, and should be here to va on or around the 29th. Then ill grab the model number. But the new deck i have is a Panasonic CQ-C9700U. Its not new new but i had it in my car originally, then it went into my truck, and i took it out of my truck because payments were killin me so i sold it to my brother.
My old system was a memphis amp(500x2) and i had that bridged running an 12" eclipse titanium series from 3 or 4 years ago. Loud as hell and a great speaker IMO.

The chain is welded solid. I did it to make a cover for the sub. That way when I throw my bag in the trunk I dont land it on the speaker. AND ITS NOT GHETTO. It too a really long time to do that!!! LOL Seriously.
The EQ was easy to install. The hardest part was finding a sheet of ABS plastic in my small town. LOL
The white switch is for my fog lights, the knob is the bass control (the crossover sub volume)
The Red thing is the LED for my other shifter. Its a Varad Racerboy, the one that controls up to four things. (little buttons on it.) The LED blinks to let me know something is on.
I had to leave the keyless entry in the car, and I could not get it to fit behind the radio because of all the wiring for the computer I am gonna be putting in. I just have to redo that part. LOL

old panisonic head unit...scoschie(sp) wiring kit. 8ga. power 9ga. ground, power acoustik ts980.2 (980watt, 2 channel) amp, and two old MTX thunder 4500 subs... hit 144db in an EF hatch with a 600 watt amp...i should be at around 150db. but i only run one sub on one channel most of the time because thats just overkill, i knocked a picture off my nehbors wall. and for about the last 2 weeks, i havent even had my system in...
also, pioneer (free!!!!) front speakers, and powerbass 6x9's in the rear ($40 cuz my friends new accord has shallow mounts, so he couldnt use them...cutting the bar was roumerd to not let the trunk lid stay up)

In my old Golf (just sold it and the system as well):
Eclipse CD5000 headunit (gotta love the 8v preamp out)
JL 1000/1 amp
Rockford Fosgate P400-4
Rockford Fosgate T215D2
Custom built ported box tuned to 38 Hz
Rockford Fosgate P163c doors
2 Farad Monster cap (didn't notice a difference but had it just in case )

well I no longer have much of a system except a head unit and I dont know the specs on it... I REALLY want to upgrade... even though I like the RF, I want a bit cleaner sub... maybe an Adire Audio Brahma, or an RE anything really lol, or even a JL... I have some old stuff in my garage so I might just throw that in the civic if I ever get time... anwyay thats my old system... [X(]

HU= Pioneer AVH-P7500DVD, FS= Infinity kappa perfect 6.5 component, RS = Infinity Kappa 6.5 co-ax, SW= Infinity Kappa Perfect 12's x2 Amps Infinity Kappa 402a and 602a for the Subs and Dynamat everywhere. All kept safe and secure with a Viper 550 alarm with a motion sensor for warning chirps.. Alarms usually save equipment, but FYI motion sensors hooked up right save you from the headache of a broken window or busted lock of someone trying to make sure your blinking light wasn't just for vanity.

Thanks, yeah they hit pretty hard. I have them turned down because they tend to drown out my Alpine's on most rap songs. System sounds great with rock!

Oh yeah.. forgot to mention there's dynamat in every door panel and the trunk, thanks for reminding me! I also have a 7" kennwood touchscreen monitor right in front of the shifter and then two kennwood 5" monitors in the headrests. I don't have pics of them so I didn't mention it the first time.
Actually I'm thinking about getting rid of the monitors! I get great tv reception and it will come with ps2 wires(a/c and a/v) and the power inverter.
