Autocross and Road Course Racing - "The Race Car"

Some of you may know about the race car, some of you may have seen me mention it. Well, here's the scoop.

Formula SAE car: 600cc yamaha enginewith an eaton M24 supercharger strapped on it that has to breath througha 20mm restictor (size of a nickel.) 85hp (53 lb-ft w/95% available from 3,000 [idle]to 11,000 rpm)at the rear wheels through a customLSD,head machined to be put on backwards so the supercharger sits on the bottom side and the exhaust comes out the top back side. 0-60 in 3.5 0-85 in 5 seconds... top speed is 85 since there's onlythe first three gears in itto saverotational mass, the other ones arne't used inthe mostly autox racing we do. Magnesium bits for weight saving, all aluminum hardware. Weighs in at around 475 lbs.

Everything on it is custom built by a bunch of my friends and I've just been helping them out with the electronics and they let me drive and things. Custom made traction and launch control, F1 style shifting etc. I think the only real bought prats on it are the calipers... everything else is custom.

Hm, there is one of the 0-60 run somewhere, I'll try to track it down.

Remmy: That engine spinning at 11g under 12psi of boost with no sound restriction is all the noise you'll ever need in it. It definitely sounds the part of a race car.:D

Even though its loud, I bet that turbo quiets it down a lot. Have you ever seen a miata race? Those damn miatas will make your ears bleed.

13" wheels 4 x 100 lug pattern. The wheels AND tires weigh 10 lbs a corner. Custom magnesium wheel centers FTW.


And yeah Remmy... supercharger. No time to wait for the turbo to spool in autocross.

Eh, it's not fun until you know how to drive it. The first time goes something like: Stall, stall, stall, stall, accelerate, oh sh*t, shift, turn, spin, stall, stall, accelerate, oh sh*t, shift, OH SH*T, BRAKE, turn, spin, stall, etc. It's violent until you know how to control it.

Hm, if you look at the pictures and use the conesto reference height you'll see how that becomes a very bad idea. Even driving around the pits at races is scary because you're eye level is about at the bumper of road cars. I'll try and dig up a picture you may like though.;)

Not our SAE car. You have to remember that this is the 3rd fastest SAE car in the world.;)
As of 2006, no idea about 2007 cars.

We generally beat the fastest road cars by 5-8 seconds on a 60 second lap. The only things we have trouble beating are the shifter karts.
