General Tech Help - Air Condition trouble 1995 DX 1.5

I searched the forum and did not find any air con info so here goes...

1995 1.5 DX Air Con compressor engages only when engine cold. When hot or on a hot day will not engage. Tried new relays already with no success. Compressor runs if power is jumped to the compressor, so I do not think it is the clutch or compressor.

Blows cold air fine when compressor running, problem is compressor sometimes will not engage.

I heard it might be the ECM / ECU! Should I try a new one?

HondaCar shop in Houston is trying to sell me a new compressor and wants to charge $1300 or more for the job! WTF!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the system fully charged?

not sure the problem, but probably not the ECU.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. 6 months ago I had the system evacuated and recharged and a dye penetrant chemical added. No leak was detected with the dye and also as I said it works fine if I can only get the compressor to engage reliably.

Cheers

If the system is not fully charged, the compressor wont engage as often as it should, but if you've had it done a few months ago it could be a compressor problem. I would'nt pay $1300 tho.

Well $1100 later, I have solved the problem. The condensor was leaking, so I had it replaced. The mechanic found the compressor clutch and coil were worn beyond specs and replaced them.

This did NOT solve the problem.

The problem was in the control panel inside the car. Replaced the control panel $250 and now it works all the time. Hope this helps somebody.

I did notice that the little internal light by the fan switch would flicker at night. If yours does this, it is likely the same problem. It was a short in the aircon button all the time.

Cheers,

Derek
