so.. ive wanted to boost my ex for a while now. and ive been fighting with whether to install it myself or have it installed and all the while i was saving up my money.

i was at work today and i got a text from my friend who said he saw a 03 gti in the paper for 179 a month..

intrigued.. i met up with him after work and we drove out to the dealer to take a look. they showed me the only gti they had left (apparently they had a bunch of em) it was an 04 gti 5 spd. with 32000 miles.

i took it for a test drive.. and i had to have it.

worked out a price and financing and all that.. 16000 out the door.

i'll have pictures up tomorrow.

what do you guys think about gti's??? was it worth it?

cool. http://www.hondacivicforum.com/micons/m6.gif I like the 04 body style better than the new ones, just a little bit. :) what color? is it stock?

a friend of mine has an 02 gti 1.8T. stock it was slow but then he bought the neuspeed power chip which bumped his boost up to somewhere around 13 psi. now his car is quick is as s***! i would recommend doing the same. good luck with it!

dont let these guys scare you...i have owned several Vee Dubs and have never hand any problems...01 1.8T Jetta Wolfsburg ed., 84 cabriolet, 2002 cabrio 1.8 (still own), 02 GTI 1.8T (miss that car). And I am looking to buy a 04 R32 this summer if I can get my civic ready to sell in time and find a r32 that hasnt been rode hard and put away wet. good luck with the car!

So, enlighten me.

Why did you buy an overpriced, slow, turbo car after you test drove it? You could have turboed you're honda for a fraction of the price, learned a ton in the process, and best of all, made more power and have been WAY faster. [&:]

Well, have fun with the car regardless. I guess there's no turning back now, but better have a good warranty.

badb0ybilly

I think you guys are under the impression that imma forget about my civ.

Wrong. That car will be turbo'd. And I'm going to do it myself so ill still learn the ins and outs. But as of now my civic is a piece and it needs some work. I've wanted the gti since before I even liked civics.

I don't want to be one of those guys who jus buys a car with power n thinks he's the ****. I wanna know what makes a car fast. How to fix it if it breaks. I wanna be a tuner..

But at the same time its nice to have a car that I don't have to worry about breaking down every time I drive it. My civic will just be a project car while the gti will be a daily driver.. That just happens to be way faster than my civic.

I appreciate you guys warning me about that stuff... but the reality is... all cars have problems.. And vw is still a reputable company so I'm not too worried. (I do have a bumper to bumper warrantee btw)

Its gray by the way. I can't remember who asked (I'm typing this on my phone and it sucks t go back and look)

I do have one question tho. Is there any way to combat the lag before the boost kicks in? Its a good half a second to 3/4 of a second before it takes off. What should I do??

Um... downshift?

Turbo lag is just that, lag. I don't want to hear it though, mine spools at 5K.;)

do you have any idea what the insurance would be on a vette or a s2000?? im 19 years old.

and why does a car have to be fast to be nice i dont understand. whats wrong with havin a car that drives well.

i mean. i dont plan to take the car to the strip.. so why would it matter that i could've gotten a faster car?

i know you guys are just giving me your imo. im just trying to get some insight.

what type of intercooler does it have? One of the ways to reduce spool-up time is to eliminate as many degrees of bends as possile.

badb0ybilly
03-12-2007, 12:32 AM
its all stock. the intercooler is just behind the right fender. i was lookin at it tonight. i cant see the whole system. it doesnt seem to make sense to me. the turbo is in the back of the engine.. (close to the firewall) like 3 feet from the exhaust manifold... it probably has everything to do with me knowing nothing about turbo.. but i thought the turbo was bolted to the turbo manifold (which replaces your header..?) the exhaust manifold goes down from 4 tubes comin off the head to 1 tube that goes straight into the intercooler which then goes back and into the turbo.. is it just different because its a factory boost? cuz it seems to contradict everything that ive read about turbo. haha. im going to get some pictures tomorrow.. its too late tonight.

and the quote i posted earlier about the chip.. i responded to it but it didnt show up. i asked how the install was on a chip? and i assume i'd need a really good tune after that.. anybody know?

aaaand, you bought a VW?? :D Good luck with that. How many miles are on it, and how long does the warranty last?

aryiman98civic
03-12-2007, 10:59 AM
also i would not add anything performance wise to the car since when you do that it will take away from your warranty, make sure you read that first to see what you can and cannot do.

my friend took his computer to a performance shop and they shipped it out to neuspeed. when it came back all he did wasplug it back into the car. no tuning is needed.

if u do decide to get the chip get the REVO brand chip. they are alot more popular and one of the best from what i heard.

My buddy did the same thing with his GTI. Picked up a Neuspeed Cat-back, cai, and had them chip the ECU. He said he could definitely feel the difference

Your Civic is backwards from most engines... Honda turned them around "the right way" in the newer Civics.

Looks good man...real clean and new looking...my homie has a neuspeed chip in his audi 1.8t and it didnt make a realdifference until he got an intake so you might want to do intake and exhaust first before the chip if you go that route

I had an 05 GTI 1.8T and I honestly loved it, but they are high maintenance. The timing belt and water pumps have to be changed every 60k miles because the way the engine is designed, they are prone for failure...The transmissions due tend grind a little sometimes if you're slammin it into 2nd and/ or 3rd but its not a huge issue...the tranny's dont comepletely fail on you unless you're beating the living crap out of it non-stop. Good luck with it. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I did. I miss the car to be honest. Oh yeah...do yourself a favor as soon as you get it....replaced the stock diverter valve and get it chipped!!! go with the APR or the GIAC chip.

sorry for the delay'd response here.. i was out of town.. my friend and i took a road trip in his focus svt from chicago to maryland to chill wit his family for the weekend.

i am definitely planning on autocrossing the vw mxs. i just wanna put a new suspension on it first. its kinda got a lot of body roll right now on tight turns. i wanna drop it 1.8" any suggestions for a good suspension thats not rediculously expensive?

KnightRiderCivic
04-02-2007, 08:18 AM
Honestly I would get on some Vw forums and ask around....its better to ask people who actually have the car. The car looks good man and there are alot of possiblities with that car. and for the lag...get the pipes as straight and as short as you can to improve flow...also if you happen to hit the lotto or sumthing you can go with a ballbearing ceramic turbo.

badb0ybilly
04-05-2007, 03:01 AM
lol. thanks knight. i checked out a few vw forums. but i tend to stick around here because people here know what they are talking about.

i try my best not to ask vehicle specific questions. i was just asking about suspension in general. not "whats the best suspension for my gti"

even when i had my civic i asked general automotive questions. that way i dont have to worry about trying to decipher different generations of cars and the differences between them. i try to simply get everyone's opinion about general automotive subjects and then personally apply it to my own specific scenario. obviously there are some people here who know a little about gti's so maybe they can give me just a little knowlege to get me started.

as it has been said many many times on this forum.. 'hcf is a car enthusiast forum. not just a civic forum.' i apologize if i intruded on the forum with unacceptable content being that i own a vw instead of a honda.

i am probably on the wrong section here (the turbo forum) but i was just kinda excited about the car when i got it and the thread just kinda grew from there.

so again. i apologize if i upset anyone here

as a month past, I guess you have found some answers
but for the GTI 1.8T, it has lots of potentials to getmore power
basically a chip will be one of the first mod you should do, APR, GIAC, Revo are the better ones
+ intakes and exhuast and downpipe, you are having serious power
and if you want to go crazy, stage 3 turbo kit will blow your mind off
go to www.goapr.com (http://www.goapr.com) or www.ecstuning.com (http://www.ecstuning.com)
they will probably give you some better ideas

i just really wish i had the money for an r32. ::drooling::

gti is sweet. but r32 pretty much makes me splooge just thinkin about it. haha.

mybrokenblinker: yea they def look better in person. and once i get it dropped and do some kind of body work to make it look a little meaner.. it will look a lot better.

its definitely got potential. i raced a gti once when i had my civic.. he had like 6 lengths on me by the time i got into second gear. haha. idk what he had done. but i was impressed. the real problem with it is traction. whenever i get on it.. the tires spin and traction control kicks in. im still gettin used to havin so much more power than my non vtec96 ex. lol. found out that the previous owner yanked it out.. why? dont ask me.

my first autocross race is the 15th in joliet IL. im so stoked.

i think that car is sexy as sh!!!t, i always have.....ive seen some really nice ones with just some minor mods (lowered, tint, wheels) and they always catch my attention. I think it looks good stock, but couple of mods will make it much better. You might get sh!!tted on when poeple call it a chick car, that seems to be a main downfall with the GTI and the Jetta, however i like them both, chick car or not lol Screw all the haters, niice buy!!!!

i think i might do it. pink body black roof. 5% tints and black rims. blacked out tails... could look pretty sweet.

i just wanna find a good reputable shop to paint it for less than 4 grand (which is what ive been quoted)
