Header, Intake, & Exhaust - How would i quiet down an exhaust?

I just bought a car that already had an exhaust. It's too loud for me and I was wondering how I could quiet it down without replacing the whole thing? Are there any quick fixes that won't cost too much.

Thanks

How do i find out what brand exhaust it has? I've looked on it and can't find anything anywhere? Is there some place special I should look?

if its brandless, you might be out of luck...

I was reading about resonators. Would that work?

ahhh, you don't need to know the name brand. Measure the diameter of the tip. The go on eBay and search for "exhaust silencer" or "2.5 in silencer" etc.

the exhaust might not be able to keep the silencer in. like i know for some mufflers, they have the bolts you screw in to keep the silencer in, and others they screw in, but a brandless one - i really don't know

Look at this silencer:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-5-MUFFLER-TIP-SILENCER-CELICA-TERCEL-PULSAR-MATRIX_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33636QQihZ003QQi temZ130098442456QQrdZ1

All you do is drill a small hole in the exhaust tip. Put a bolt through that hole and through the silencer (once it's in) and screw it into the nut that is welded on the silencer.

That's going to be the best solution.

i would say that if you don't know what brand it is then you don't know the quality of the exhaust. so iwould just get a new exhaust system

did any of you read his question?!!?!?!? He wants to quiet it down WITHOUT REPLACING his exhaust!!!! Good lord.
The silencer would be the way. If you have any pictures that you could post of your exhaust that would be helpful.

Well A) he doesn't know what kind it is B) he doesn't know the quality of the exhaust, so it could rott out in a month, it could last a year, and the silencer would only quiet it down so much for all we know it could still be insanely loud with just a silencer. then he would just be back at square 1. and if he was to put in a resonator for the cost of getting one and having it installed by a shop he may as well just pay an extra $50-100 and get a completely new catback that he knows is quiet

Okay the only reason that the silencer wouldn't work is if he had holes in his exhaust. I asked for pictures to see the exhaust.

My advice is on the assumption that his exhaust is a cheapo aftermarket exhaust without holes, that is loud because of the fat can on the back. If his exhaust is stainless, which it seems like most exhausts are now-a-days, then he won't have to worry about rust holes. Thus, the silencer would quiet the exhaust.
