All I can think of is a fuel leak somewhere inside the engine bay. As the engine heats up, it evaporates the leaking gas, and you smell it. But that wouldn't explain the smell going away part unless it was a really slow leak...

Check your vapor recovery system. This might explain why it only happens on start up.

Hi there, how do i check the vapour recovery system, didnt even know there was such a thing.?
PS, wats a cat back exhaust system ?????? i need to replace my back box but if the whole exhaust is on its last legs then will get a good performance enhancing one but just wondered what a cat back system was.....?
Thanks

This is testing that the vapor recovery systems, including parts like the charcoal canister and fuel tank vent, are functioning correctly. This system is supposed to prevent unburned gasoline fumes from exiting your car. Basic visual inspections including fresh air inlet of charcoal canister.
