General Civic Talk - Finally removing duals - Pictures!

Well, as some of you know, I used to have a body kit, and had a dual exhaust system to go with it. Since then, I've removed the kit (I'm going for my own twist onthe jdm/type-r/sleeper look), but I never got around to having the duals taken off.Well, I've looked (with much sadness) at my duals for long enough. When I get time this week, I'm going to remove the y-pipe altogether (and sell the extra muffler to my friend). This will do a few things at once:
1)Remove an abhorrently ricy dual exhaust from my Civ
2)Return the pathetic amount of backpressure to my car
3)Shorten the exhaust system; the body kit had a big butt (lol)... the back bumper stuck out a little further than the stock bumper did, so the mufflers consequently stick out like 6"

I think having the muffler "sucked" under the bumper rather than sticking out 6"-8" (as well as only having one muffer;))will look a lot better than what I've got going on now. Well, at least until I get around to getting some type-r lips and a good resonator. Then... custom cat-back, here I come!

I'll get pics up of the removal, and before/after shots. I'll also get some 0-60 times before and after just to prove what a dual exhaust takes away from your car. Then, when someone asks about dual exhausts, you can quote me ;)

^ i hate to start an argument here, but backpressure isn't a myth, it might be in the fuel injected honda world, but not in the gas guzzling automobilia world years ago.

could be, but in this case, the article applys.

Yea back pressure does matter, when my exhaust broke on my DX just under the front seat area it had no low end power/torque at all...... it made a lot of noise but struggled like hell to actually drag itself anywhere.....

can vouch when it happened to me as well

but Reaper, good luck with ev erything! What size dual piping did you have? I've heard if you keep it fiarly small, like 1.75" you can still retain most of hte backpressure you need, but withut the kit the duals prolly look odd. Keep us updated! :)

I never said they were. I also made no mention of horsepower at all. Please actually read the post before assuming. I said 0-60 times, which are a fully measurable thing. All it takes is a stopwatch and a car with a speedometer; I have both. All I plan on proving is that a dual exhaust slows a car down.

Thanks for the support, Flip and cyber... you guys are the only ones that posted here that seem to care about de-ricification and not whether or not backpressure applies to Hondas.

good sh*t, the only thing worse than altezza taillights are dual exhausts

well i think if you had big piping on the duals then there would be a noticable loss of backpressure, and a loss of velocity, and a loss in torque ya know? So not only do i think the removal of the duals is good for looks, its also good for your torque. If backpressure didnt apply to Hondas, why would Sacicons have made it a sticky in the Header, Intake, Exhaust section? And isnt loss of backpressure/velocity the whole reason duals make you lose torque?

Again, good luck though! :)

Sac knows what the hell he's talking about. That's all I have to say.

Regardless of these backpressure arguments, it is better for your Civic, reaper, to not have all that extra big assed pipe on there. Replace it with 2.25in., 2.5in., or 60mm mandral bent piping. You will not regret it and your car won't hate you anymore for making it a ricer! j/k.

Did it have a kit with dual outlets or was it stock-bodied? I can understand if the kit was made to have duals (like my old one did), but putting duals on a civic for no reason is pretty dumb.

At any rate, the duals are off as of yesterday (I'm at school right now, so I can't post pics)... I'll have before/after pics up later today. Unfortunately, removing the y-pipe shortened it just a little too much. The muffler's now tucked behind the back bumper slightly, but it still looks better than duals. At least I can rock this exhaust until I can afford a custom cat-back (I'm probably going with 2.5" tubing; I want to get a B16 and eventually turbo that, so I think the 2.5" will do) without feeling embarrassed.

Things I still need for the cat-back:
1) OEM rear bumper: I had to do some trimming to get the stock bumper to fit the duals. When I get the pics up, you'll know what I mean
2) lip kit: I don't want to have the exhaust system run and then have to modify it so it doesn't touch the lip.
3) Resonator: I don't like the weedwacker-on-steroids exhaust tone

Real nice, was the tone different after switching?

I'll get some more pics up either tomorrow or sunday.

And the tone's a lot deeper and throatier... it's still a little raspy at the higher rpm's, but that'll get cleared up when I get the cat-back run (with a Magnaflow resonator). I'll get some sound clips up on youtube or something and get you guys a link.
