Mechanical Problems & Technical Chat - i checked TPS. How do you test for map sensor

model: CIVIC Si 2000


1 - Turn your key to the ON position (but do NOT start the car)
2 - Then, using the red probe provided with the multi meter, tap into the middle wire going into the tps
3 - Once tapped, put the other probe onto a ground source (I usually just use a bolt on the Throttle Body)
4 - You should see a reading of 0.45-0.50 with the throttle plate closed

Now, do steps2 & 3again, only this time with the throttle plate completely open (this is a lot easier with two people, but it is possible by yourself, just get creative, haha)

The reading with the throttle plate open should be 4.5-5.0



Here are my RESULTS. They are good right

throttle plate close 0.50
throttle plate open 4.49

The TPS readings look good. Given the missing bolt in your distributor and the potential shoddy work by the Honda dealer, it might also be wise to recheck the ignition system.

timing right..... It hasn't stalled butit seemed like it wanted too..but i need a more accurate way to check the speed sensor just to get it out of the way

Sorry, I have posted all the MAP sensor information available to me. It sounds like the stall problem may be improved but not completely cured. Is it possible that the ECU just needs a bit more time to readjust? How long was your test drive?

Not too long maybe about 30 miles and then when I got home i left the car idle for about 15 minutes.

You think I should take it to a shop recheck the timing on it?

Sounds like a sufficiently long drive to me. Did you swap your MAP sensor with the one your friend gave you?

Yeah I did.A while agoI left the car on my driveway running for about 15 minutes and it seemed like it was going to stall but it didn't. Then I drove on the city for about 7 miles and car didn't act up. I will take it tomorrow to a shop so they can check for the timing on the distributor.

By the way, you can use your multimeter to test two different wires (VCC1 and MAP lines) of your MAP sensor circuit (see first two pictures). ECM/PCM connector C (31P) is 134 in the last picture.

If you do a Google search, I think you will also find instructions for testing MAP sensor functionality itself with your multimeter.

As an aside, the fact that you could possibly also be having problems with your distributor made me remember that the list of potential causes for stalling included a faulty Crankshaft Position/Top Dead Center/Cylinder Position sensor circuit, as well as a faulty CKF sensor circuit.

Thanks Ron but my mechanic just checked and he said my map sensor is good.
**By the way my timing was off by 2 degrees and he also cleaned my throttle plate it was fealty. Black crap around it. He did all that for 25 dollars not bad huh.

Just keeping my fingers cross now [&:] O yeah he also said if it starts to act up again more likely it can be the Ignition and he will test it out.

That sounds very promising! I hope all your stalling problems are now over, and it's smooth sailing from here on out.
