Street n Strip - Shift points

Alright tell me if this is good for racing. I shift from first to second at 29-30 mph then from second to third i shift at 59 the from third to fourth i shift at 80 then i cant max out fourth gear until 112. Is that good.

you know, you could get a very inexpensive tachometer at most parts stores, and it would be safer.

you wanna shift before the redline to stay in the high rpms (for v-tec). dont push the car to its redline limit because you'll lose pick up and time.

Step 1) Buy tachometer.
Step 2) Dyno car.
Step 3) Figure out where the horsepower peak is at the top end.
Step 4) Shift at that peak in horsepower.

If your car makes its peak horsepower at 6300 RPM and the redline is at 6500 RPM, there's no point to shift any higher than 6300 RPM. Fairly simple.

bounce it off the revlimiter just to know for sure

Not to thread jack, but does anyone know the stock peak hp shift point for a 99 Civic Ex?

somewhere i read an article about when to shift, it said that dont bother knowing where your higher power point is, because no matter what you benitfit from shifting at redline (but not hitting rev limiter) they tested it and it showed that no matter what you should get as many rpms from your engine as possible.

forty04: according to chiltons, the horsepower peak for our EX's is 6800.

actually, if your power does drop off, you should see what rpm you would be at after the shift. if you lose say, 15hp from 6300 to 6800 redline, but shifting at 6300 will put you where you are down 20 from what you have at redline, then you should wrap it to the redline because you have more power there than where you would be if you shifted. and ive seen a stock focus being tested that shaved a few tenths by shortshifting by a couple hundred rpm. thats just really poorly engineered gear ratios though. but for the original Q, get a tach, and shift at redline.
