I've gotten in the habit of showing off my drifitng skill so whenever
I have friends in the car, I show them in parking lots or going into
a neighborhood or something.

Well, yesterday, while going about 35-45 mph, I took a hard right
to get into a neighborhood and pulled my e-brake and not only did
I drift, but I drifted into a 540 spin and my engine shut down and
everything. It was a very scary moment for everyone in the car,
scared the hell out of me too. I never had THAT happen before.

So, no more drifiting for me. Screw that... haha...

Car is fine though, just a terrifying moment.

Drifting in a civic? :D:D:D roffle copter

You call pulling and ebrake and sliding - drifting? Unless you can maintain control of your slide, you're not drifting, but being a BAD NAME. I don't see how it could be possible to drift in FWD car.

No need to call me a jackass...I FULLY AGREE THAT NO ONE SHOULD CALL YOU THAT, I CHANGED HIS WORDS FOR YOU..WHEELBROKER...[sm=bounceybounce.gif]

It is possible to drift in it, and most of the time I do keep control,
but this time I messed up a little, heh...

Anyway, I'm new to all this car stuff, so help me out, be a good fellow, and explain to me what drifiting is so I don't keep misrepresenting the art.

drifting is when you slide the rear end out in a RWD, then apply power to keep the rear end out all the way through the corner. a true drift isnt possible in a FWD car like a civic. e-brake slides are fun, but its not drifting. and its hard as hell on your car.

youve never seen a video of drifting?

Nah uh, can you direct me to some?

So, what I was doing was just e-brake sliding? Man, my friends seem like gurus to me and they told me it was drifting... oh well, thanks for the clear up.

Oh wow, I saw some drift videos...

Yeah, I was just sliding, lol

That is really neat though, I didnt realize you could get such tight turns by doing that.

If you like drifting, then I would definately recommend watching "drift bible" . I'm not a big fan of drifting as a competitive sport, but that video is amazing. The drift king demonstrates and discusses different techniques of drifting. His cars included a silvia, MR2, AE86 GTS and something else that I can't remember.

it may be drifting in the american sense. but in america, its a "sport" that is based on judging. like a beauty pagent. that isnt motorsports to me. to me, FF "drifting" will always be "sliding"

^^^^^ I agree. Drifting used to be how rwd cars could keep speed and rpms up around corners. Now its just a show off.

Although I do enjoy playing with it in the rain.

Check this link out. I was new to this at one point too! eventually you'll overdo it a few times and learn. Practice makes perfect. If you really want to have some fun go out to a desert or your local "offroad" area(where dirtbikes and atv's go "OHV") and learn it in a big ass open dirt area. That way you'll kinda get the feel of when you'rs going to fast, sliding too much, finding that sweet spot, so on and so forth bassically so you can learn a little better without putting any one at risk- I mean obviously in realation to you environment. That's waht I did and BOY! did I get better, keep in mind though, DIRT HANDLES DIFfERENTLY THAN STREET! But it kinda gives you a way better idea of how to go about doing it. Oh, and by the way, I don't mean to seem like an ass or anything when I say this; In my opinion most accidnets are caused by people "Showing off". Untill you know what your doing a little better, don't put your friends life at risk. Just a few words of wisdom, but take them how you will.

GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, BE SAFE, AND BE SMART!!!!

i should point out that you can drift in an AWD as well. i just realized i left that out. it just needs power to the rear wheels.

How is it that I rack up such high scores in the "drifting" portions of Need 4 Speed Underground in my Civic?

because all the cars in NFS are rwd. which is why it wil never be as good of a game as GT4.

i had that happen to me in my mustang going down a main road, of course mine was accidental, but the end result waas the same was raining like hell was doin 40 road curve right then left, car didnt want to stick so when i made the left and the road straightened the car decided it was going to continue turning left, spun like 2-3 times, and car died sideways through 3 lanes of oncoming traffic talk about crappin your pants :-\

I had a auto 93 mustang that i spun a couple times, but a 5speed 2000 stang that i never spun, im pretty dam good a drifting tho.... its fun and gives your passenger a nice scare most of the time

yeah, on curvy roads in the rain, FWD>RWD. but when its on purpose, thats a whole nother story;)

Well I have to agree that judging drifting on style is stupid and pointless from a spectators perspective it is fun as hell from a drivers. and whether its FWD RWD or AWD its fun doing. and not the easiest thing to do so even if its in a front wheel drive i give you props. now if you could do it with out the e-brake it would be better. but i have to say this.....dont do it on the streets cause "drifting" around a corner is cool until there is a car coming. keep it on the closed courses or empty parking lots.

here here!

yea, technically you aren't drifting with fwd, that's why it's so lovingly reffered to as "ass dragging". its fun, but don't get any bald spots on your rear tires. i had an old post with some crazy drifting by a guy in an AE86. i'm a bit too lazy to go dig it up though...

Yeah I agree. I call it power sliding in a FWD car, or even in an underpowered RWD car. I power slid my civic into a 540 on purpose in a wide open industrial park once and forgot to push the clutch in so it rolled the engine backward because it still maintained the same velocity while spinning and the engine check light came on because of this and it took awhile to get it started again. Oh well it was fun, OOOH yeah! and I tried the thing with the Mcdonalds trays the other day! Fun stuff!

Oh jee whiz.. Y'know I too thought I was drifting... This is good information tho. Maybe now I won't gloat "oh yeah man I'm learning how to drift, aw yeah!"
The thing I was wondering is how much damage is using the e-brake causing when you slide? Cuz.. I haven't really figured out how to take corners going really fast in a standard (I have a 1990 Civic LX). I don't mind doing crazy things in *my* car. If I damage it, that's my fault. I have been trying to power slide in my dad's 94 Del Sol (which is an automatic) and I was wondering if I'm waaay messing it up by using the e-brake.
On the topic of "I am never gonna drift again." I have 2 pretty embarassing stories. When I first got my liscence.. I, like most teens, felt invincible. So I went really fast down residential areas a few times, just so I could try power sliding around a corner. I know, that's utterly ludicrous, but when I do it I do nothing, but watch my surroundings. Anyway.. I was a complete jackass and went really fast around a corner.. and a car was parked near the curb so I couldn't really see too well ont othe street I was sliding into (going way too fast, btw). These old ppl were walking along the street. I didn't hit them, but the guy leaped onto the curb jerking his wife by the arm to avoid me running them over. In my defense I wasn't even close to them, and I think they kinda over reacted.. but it was a horrible experience. I decided then to never ... "power slide" again.... in residential areas anyway.
2nd story: I was driving home from school and I went down this small winding road that leads towards my house. It's fun to kinda drive fast down it and nobody uses it..more or less. I was in *my* car (the stick-shift..as i noted earlier, I don't know how to power slide with a stick shift) and I thought I'd give power sliding a try. I don' even know what I did, but I went around a corner and tried to put it in second (I had no clue what I was doing) and the car sputtered and stalled out in the middle of the turn. To make matters worse, a big SUV full of guys my age drove by. They got to witness a total moron in a beat up 15 yr old civic stall out while obviously trying to do something cool....it was utterly pathetic.

(sry I type alot.. I can't help it)

he sounded like he learned his lesson, and isnt too interested in doing it like that again. and id be willing to bet that youve done SOMETHING in your car that was a danger to others, so go easy on him. its not like he was saying he loved it and didnt care, and was going to go do it again. but i will agree that it was pretty dumb, and would also sugest he not do it any more.

Oh yeah trust me I totally learned my lesson. It was when I kinda started driving so I was all psyched out about it. Granted, yeah it was completely moronic, but I learned something from it at least. Plus, I'm always watching out for people on the street. I'm reckless and paranoid at the same time.. if that makes sense.

You can drift in a fwd car. Putting the tail out in a rwd and keeping it there is really just power oversteer, but call it drifting if you want. If you take a FWD car out onto a big bit of tarmak and get up some speed, 60-70mph, and chuck on full lock the car will 4 wheel drift. You have to be control of it still, but when the grip returns as the speed reduces, it ends, unlike a RWD car, in which you can keep the reas spinning
