So I came across a good deal on a set of 16s for my new hatch. $275 for these, no dings, dents, or curbing.


But im not looking for red wheels for the black EK. So im going to polish the lip and paint them black. This is after stripping the lips down.


Then started sanding with 320 grit and then with fine/extra fine 3m sand pads.


Sanded down the spokes a little just to ruff up the paint a little. The lips are starting to shine in the sun nicely. But I need some opinions. Think I should leave the double lip or just the last lip? By last I mean the outer 1 inch or so. I figured id strip enough to get an idea of what the double would look like.

 

i think what would make it easier would be to use paint stripper and sand the whole rim, so basically polish the whole rim. then you can tape up the lip and primer and paint the rest of the rim black. i think its easier and less work doing it this way

 

Nice wheels, since there are no tires mounted you don't have to worry about damaging the tires; some Aircraft Stripper would lift that paint off in no time. It's nasty stuff though, exercise extreme caution if you use it.

 

I used aircraft stripper on the lips. The paint on the spokes is nice and smooth still, so I sanded it a little and plan on priming over it. No need to go to bare metal all over the wheel. Im just taping off the outer lip and painting the rest.

 

Gotcha, should look pretty sweet when they're done.

Yeah, me either. I did some more sanding today. Taped off the lips and plan on painting them later this week. Its been really windy and rainy.

 

Got my tires in the mail today. Ended up getting Sumitomo's from tirerack.com. I taped and primered the wheels today and will do the black and clear coats tomorrow. Its about time for the Louisville game.
