Default Looking for Civic Hatchback advice

I ride a Honda CBR600RR to work every day but some times I need a car. I was thinking of looking for a civic hatchback but I know very little about model and year differences.

I want to do as much work as possible myself. Are there certain years that are easier to work on?

What are some key things to look for if I start browsing cragslist?

Other things that may be helpful in giving good suggestions:
I want a manual
I don't think I will want to run a turbo
The car will get lowered

One potentially advanced question: I live in CA, so if I want to swap in a motor from Japan it has to be the same as a motor that could have been bought in a US car. What motors fit this description? This may affect what models I look at if it limits or expands my options for motors down the road.

Thanks, I know this is my first post but if I buy the car there will be many more.

There aren't any JDM engines that could have came in a US Civic.

Look for a 92-95 Civic Hatchback. Easiest to work on and inexpensive.

Any civic between 1992-2000 will be your best choice. They are easy to swap motors in and out of and have a lot of aftermarket support.

well since your in cali and they are very strick. then i say get a 99-00 SI coupe since they dont make the SI in a hatchback.

if you want to keep cop friendly as possible.

the main thing you have working for you is your in cali and dont have to worry to much about rust at least or seized bolts from road salt.
