HCF Project Section - hamorhead's almost turbo'd rex
hamorhead
08-12-2009, 12:08 PM
Last May i found a 1991 crx si on craigslist and decided to buy it and sell my 93 hatch. I was told it needed a new clutch and a/c compressor. Since i bought it i have replaced the clutch, front and rear brake pads, front and rear brake rotors, rear brake calipers, master cylinder, ignition switch, and struts.
The rex will eventually be turbo'd on stock internals pushing 200whp converted to OBD1. It will be tuned by John Vega from phearable.net.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj17/hamorhead/struts002.jpg
Well the first night i bought it, it rained and i awoke to find a large puddle behind the drivers seat. I ripped the interior apart to let it dry and also found my problem which was clogged sunroof drain tubes.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj17/hamorhead/DSC_0021.jpg
So after completely stripping and putting back in my interior i decided that i would never let this happen again. Istarted looking for a new sunroof, a used non-rusty one, or a sunroof plug. A new sunroof was $400 so that option was out, no one had a used crx sunroof so that option was out, and sunroof plugs were almost as expensive as a new sunroof. So what do i do? Ghetto-ify. My dad and I took fiberglass and made a template using the old rusty sunroof and used brackets and silicon to secure it in. This approach was functional but very ugly. We decided to bondo it flush and paint the entire roof. Its pretty now:), but still needs real paint instead of spray paint.
here's the car as she sits-

some how the quote doesn't qualify for the 5 letter rule
thats wierd
but thats what ill be running

08-18-2009, 07:01 PM
ive decided i want the rex to be tuned by John Vega from phearable.net ive heard he does really good tunes plus hes only an hour further than the closest (reliable) tuner
also im looking at getting one of the following FMIC kits any suggestions?
also i'm gonna paint it black so i'm leaning towards the one that is already black

They are all about the same. You could easily paint it yourself so its pretty much up to you. I prefer the chrome look for the intercooler and piping

and im going for sleeper status so i wanted black tubing

does anyone know if its better to replace my head gasket when i put in ARP headstuds?
cvcrcr99
08-23-2009, 10:56 AM
Yes, I would go ahead and get a thicker HG since you will be turboing.
hamorhead
08-23-2009, 03:14 PM
Yes, I would go ahead and get a thicker HG since you will be turboing.
just to lower compression or is it just to have a thicker hg? cuz the D16A6 already has a lower comp ratio than the other D16s i believe its 9:1
and what brand? ive heard mixed things on cometic
cvcrcr99
08-23-2009, 04:31 PM
Mainly to lower compression just a little. I have a cometic HG, no complaints. If you don't go cometic, I would just stick with a new OEM one.
plethoric33
08-23-2009, 04:47 PM
I like it without the lip. But its going to be hard to mount an intercooler and keep it hidden on a crx.
hamorhead
08-23-2009, 06:01 PM
i think im going to leave the lip off because i like not scraping or worrying about scraping everywhere
and since my comp ratio is low enough for me i would just replace this with a new OEM one
will it be better to replace with OEM or just leave the one i have on there now?
plethoric33
08-23-2009, 07:05 PM
Might as well replace if your uncertain about its condition.
hamorhead
08-23-2009, 07:26 PM
yea it came on the car
i guess i add that to the long list of maintenence items lol
hamorhead

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj17/hamorhead/wideband002.jpg
and its not really as scratched up as the pics make it look (stupid flash)
and i bought a new master cylinder cuz my brake pedal was sinking so i decided i might as well replace the brake lines too
so i bought some SS ones:)
hamorhead
08-27-2009, 05:18 PM
my ignition switch went out today:( and it almost left me stranded but i finessed it oh so fine and made it home i replaced it and its all good now:)
oh and while it was apart i just HAD to start the car with a screwdriver ;)
yea i know im a car nerd but it was SOO cool

Edit - if you want to use the sig, but without the bronze wheel, let me know, I'll remove it and re-post it for you to save.

I have no idea how to do that stuff (the link), I am not even sure if you are able to do so with the free version of photobucket. I also realized I saved that copy over the original, so I'll try to get that one without the bronze up again.
hamorhead
09-04-2009, 05:25 PM
and im going to sell the old wheels and tires
how much do you think i can get for them
i'm going to strip the paint and sand them down and repaint them aluminum colored and try to make them as perfect as i can (with my attention span)
the tires are Kuhmo ecstas and have 50% tread left

Well, I looked around real quick, but couldn't find anything that would incorporate a link. If anyone knows how to do this with the free photobucket, let me know. But, here's the one without the bronze....maybe Nike could change it up a bit if you want and also throw that link in there.

I took that photobucket link and pasted into directly into my sig....worked just fine. sweeeeeettt I got a rex now:)
Use what I have below without the brackets, and put in the "I" in the beginning. You probably can do it with the quote, and the "91 crx si waiting for boost" because you are allowed four lines only. However, I am just guessing about you being over the 4 line limit.

No problem. All you have to do is play around with the edit features on photobucket. They have some pretty cool things in there.
Hopefully, someone can jump in here and hook you up with a project page link in your sig. BTW, I am kinda jealous of those wheels. I really do like them a lot. Even more so as they are somewhat rare. I don't see them too often.

Nice. I actually have a set of Sportlines on the way. I bought the Tokico "Advanced Handling" package, but it didn't lower it very much in the front. So I bought the Eibachs off Ebay for about half price, brand new in the box. I'm hoping they will drop the front to the point I like, but the rear is just perfect. So I'll be running Eibachs in the front and Tokicos in the rear.
hamorhead
09-05-2009, 06:47 PM
i like the sportlines but idk about the tokicos in the rear and sportlines in the front did you check the spring rates? i would think the sportlines would be stiffer which would make you understeer even more or are you just going for looks?
hamorhead
09-05-2009, 07:10 PM
also i just bought some OEM lug nuts for the wheels (thanks trustdestruction) and a low tone horn (thanks Danomatic93)
Brick
09-05-2009, 07:37 PM
Right now I'm just going for looks. However if the drop is good in the front, I might change the rears too. I'm just praying I won't need a camber kit.
hamorhead
09-05-2009, 07:41 PM
im not using one and its fine
and reaper will also tell you its not about camber its about toe
toe eats tires
also for the rear you can do the washer trick (just google it)
Brick
09-06-2009, 03:58 AM
The washer trick does work for the rear. Thats what we did. I just got an alignment so I should be good for a while until the springs come and get put on.

hamorhead
09-10-2009, 12:34 PM
i got them off amazon and i never drove the car with a good master cylinder b4 i put them on but the brakes feel better than on my old civic that was stock i wouldd recomend them if your car is older than 2000 because your rubber lines have probably started to deteriorate

Just curious, how much it to have your wheel bearing fixed?
hamorhead
09-14-2009, 02:36 PM
i priced it out as $160 to do it myself or $220 to have the shop i go to fix it
i shelled out the $60 extra lol
hamorhead
09-16-2009, 06:45 AM
so when i went to pick up that turbo kit i overheated the cheap dual amp that i had powering my speakers and i cant find one on cl so i took out my subs my other amp and the cargo cover and the car lost like 50 pounds there
also i realized if you take out the cargo cover and flip the divider thing down the back of a rex is gigantic like i could almost completely fit my surfboard (6') in there
if i ever do a engine swap it would totally fit back there
plethoric33
09-16-2009, 02:53 PM
Damn, thats pricey. My friends Ford was only $89 so I was hoping it would be similar for mine. And yeah, Rex's are pretty spacious in the back. I could fit all of my guitar equipment for shows in the back easy, 4x12 speaker cab, head, 2 guitars and cases, and pedals.
hamorhead
09-17-2009, 01:18 PM
well the part was like $80 but it has to be pressed in and the cheapest i could find around here for that was $70 if you have access to a machine shop you could press it in yourself then it would only be around $80
and my greddy catback was all rusted out so i had my exhaust shop make me a custom catback with 2 1/4 piping
its a resonator and magnaflow muffler
it sounds so nice at a constant rpm you can barely hear it but when accelerating over 3k rpms it gets nice and deep no rasp at all
and best of all it looks stock and sounds stock at idle and constant rpms:)
just adds to the sleepiness
oh yea you can come and steal my car since i posted the license plate #
you know because there so many other white crxs in my area you might get them confused lol

It doesn't hang down as bad as it looks
The pics were taken downhill from the car
Also I have to wait for the oil to burn off before I can paint it so I'll make up my mind by that time

I am trying to get into the sale section, I'm not going to lie. However, I am making constructive posts into getting there - am I not?
I went through a phase where I was considering upgrading speakers / putting in a subwoofer, etcetera. At the end of the day - to me it's added weight and not performance driven. Again that's just my opinion.
If Hamorhead is happy with more powerful speakers and some subwoofers then by all means spend the cash on it! :)
Once again did you read his thread? lol He isnt trying to shatter his windows or anything...
and to Hamorhead...

10-22-2009, 08:59 AM
I'll be on the look out for a FS thread from jprommel. I just need something simply to be able to monitor my boost. I was going through my datalogs recently and notice that I actually hit 8psi when I thought I wasn't going to go above 7. A boost gauge will help me determine if the SC has any belt slippage at anytime.
I have one (AIM acct), I am just never on there.
It is my93civicex . I had made it back when I was in like 10th grade when I first started driving and when I was in love with my slushbox-ridden EG coupe. Ever since high school ended, I never go on there anymore since everyone I knew stopped using it as well. I'll hop on now if you guys want to add me or start up a chat or whatever.
