i got a 2000 civic ex v-tech with the stock 5 speed, and i'm going to start modding it up since my warranty is close to expiration, so i was wondering if there is a high risk of ripping second gear out of my tranny is smoking the clutch with ease?

it should be good for at least 200 HP as long as you dont keep grinding the shifts. if you do tear up your tranny, the d-series trannys are not too expensive and with practice you can swap em out in about 3-5 hours. you can usually pick them up for under 150 bucks, and ive seen a few given away.

Now...to your question... The edelbrock kit puts out 178 Front wheel hp so I'd say thats around 200 hp and the tranny is doin just fine in their test car.

i say it varies upon clutch, tires, driving etc. a racing clutch will put more stress on your gears than anything. now ive had a few instances where 2nd gear has shattered on me runnin a 100hp n/a d15. ive seen honda trannys hold up to well over 200 hp. there are to many factors that decide power handling capabilities. so IMO it just varies.
