Compression and Leakdown Test Results
So my engine passed the compression test, each cylinder within 15 psiof one another, but the leakdown test showed cylinders #2 and 3 had 35% leakdown and #1 and 2 were at 25%. I know this is affecting the performance of my car (especially since i am boosted.)
Can anybody tell me roughly how many hours it would take a skilled mechanic to replacethe rings in my B16? I need to know so i can save up the loot asap. Also i was told to get "total seal rings" what the hell are they? who makes them? any suggestions for which brand rings to buy?
Thanks again for all your guys help. u guys are awesome!!!
P.S. I know u guys are going to tell me to replace my pistons and rodsas well while the engine is apart, and i would love to, but money is short so it's not an option. Next year i will .

RE: Compression and Leakdown Test Results
when you are replacing rings you will need to rescortch the cylinder walls to make sure you have a good seal when the rings break in. since b16's have pretty high compression just slap some vitaras in there they are cheap and you could runa safe amount of boost and the engine would last longer

that i am not sure about the vitaras but the thing that lets go the most first in hondas is the connecting rod. your stockers will be fine just get your stock rods shotpeened while there out..

honing and reringing takes me less than 3 hours on a b16(engine in car)......its not a hard job to do once you get the hang of it. as far as total seal.......there more for the n/a applications, a new set of hastings rings would be perfect for you. and if you would like to replace your pistons to lower compression you could look into a set of used LS pistons. personally id re ring with a good set of hastings rings and if the walls need it, give it a good hone job(if you can still see the cross hatch and the walls arent scared dont worry about it).

Since you are going to replace the rings this year and replace the pistons/rods next year you will be losing a good amount of money in labor. Maybe you should consider not running the engine too hard until you have to the money to change the pistons/rods/rings and save some labor money.

i hear what ur sayin' agent but my mechanic/friend only charges 20 per hour and he's pretty good w/ hondasso it shouldn't be that much. final impact said roughly 3 or 4 hours of labor to do the job.

less than 3 hours is how fast i can do it..........for the most part, technicians go by the labor times given by the manufacturer.....even though the job can be done in 3 hours, you could still be charged the flat rate charge of 10(if thats what the time book calls for). and yes you can replace the rings with the engine still in the car by dropping the exh, head, and oil pan. however most technicians will pull the engine out. i however hate doing more than i have to
