What is this sound coming from my engine?
Hey guys,
I know that I am seriuosly BRAND NEW to this forums but I was hoping to get some ideas of what is going on with my Civic. I have a 1999 Honda Civc LX and every time I go up an incline and give her gas, I hear this rattling sound in my engine. Its kinda like a couple of marbles rolling around in a confined space. Any idea what this is and how to fix it? I just want to know what to expect so that I don't get the 'oh, you've got a problem with your inline rotary half-block start motor and its gonna cost you $1500' from a dishonest mechanic. Thanks in advance for your responses. Cheers

It is your manifold heat shield. It happend to me before on my 00' civic. It has corroded and now rattling directly under your engine... your dealer should fix that for free... it could also be the muffler heat shield thats doing it too. Just grab one of those plumbing brackets that you tighten with a screw driver and strap it up. Later!

Wow! Thanks for the quick and precise response ... now does anyone have a picture of a manifold heat shield and/or a muffler heat shield? As you may or may not be able to tell, I don't know a whole lot about engines

its where the header of the car connects to the exhaust... needless to say it is right smack in the center under you engine, on a lift you will be able to see it clearly. Once you get your car on a lift, walk under it and examine how everything works, ask questions (not how to fix up the ride to make it go fast because the mech isnt interested in telling you) about the parts on your car to find out their functions and stuff like that.
