Guys - Hello, newbie here. Just ordered (haven't taken delivery yet) an '08 Civic EX 4dr manual. I put a lot of miles on my cars for work (almost 50,000/yr). If I followed the dealer/manufacturer recommended maintenance schedule, it would be in the shop every month and cost a fortune. My previous Jetta TDI got me 219,000 miles with no real issues. Jetta TDIs are hard to come by here in the states, so I thought I'd give Honda a try.
With my new Civic, what would you guys recommend I do to keep it running and performing well for 4 yrs and 200,000 milesor longer? Any/all input is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Seeing as how your vehicle is under warranty, not following the service schedule might give the dealership a reason to deny you a claim when something breaks (which can happen for any vehicle) especially something expensive. I would look into the warranty and it's fine print to see what you can get away with in terms of delaying recommended servicing.

Thanks for the input guys. I took delivery today. It is a beautiful car. I'll do 200 miles tomorrowhighway and city driving, that will be a good test.
I'm going to buy the "L" shaped lip spoiler right away, and in a few months have some tinting done. I'm not much into modifying my cars, I just need them toLAST.
I will look for an independant shop to service my vehicle, and will probably use synthetic oil to extend the time between changes. Other suggestions are welcome.

I was at the garage today and asked the mechanic on your behalf while getting my oil changed...
He said its personal preference regarding reg/synthetic...reg is good if you change your oil every 5,000km/3,100mi, while synthetic you can go up to 8-9,000km/5,000mi+
So for myself I am sticking with regular as I plan to change the oil myself...and I always pour in a bottle of STP after each oil change...
For yourself synthetic may be more convenient if you go longer between changes...
Enjoy the car, the newer models are really nice...I have an 01.

..and good idea to find an honest independant garage...I try to always avoid the stealership...
Depending on where you live type into Google your "City name" and "Honda Civic club forum" ...thats how I found my local honda civic club and I posted there and got a recommendation for a reputable garage I really like!

i have a 08 lx and i have the same problem. i drive500 miles aweek or more just for work and i have thought about this alot, but i think as long as you keep the oil changed every 3k miles, clean the filters, and injectors from time to time, and get a new timing belt after 100k or so miles you should be fine...hondas last forever my friend

My recommendation...
follow the new mainetenance minder system to a T. also, buy the extended warranty online.

if you mainly do highway miles, you could probably lay off taking it in every 3k miles or 4k miles since freeway driving doesnt use as much oil.
but if its stop and go, you should probably change it more often.
i also agree with the use of synthetic oil.
other than that, i think you're good to go.

I have found 2 independant shops locally who specialize in Honda/Acura. I have 5 free oil changes at my dealership, after that I'll likely have it serviced at one of the independant shops. It'll be out of warranty about 9 months after I drove it off the lot new.
