to some extent yes, but not as much as you are implying. the vtec( for the sake of the arguement, when i say vtec, i mean sohc vtec, unless i specify) motors are designed to run reletively quietly and smoothly at idle while still supporting the high rpm of a bigger cam profile. the small lobes on the cams are not a lot smaller than those of the non-vtec, while those on the big side are noticably bigger. not exactly made for gas mileage. then there is what is known as vtec-e, which is the same principle, but instead of a big "semi-racing" profile on the top end of the rev range, it uses a small profile similar to that of the non-vtec 16v engines. while on the low end, it actually operates more like a 12v motor, the second intake valve opens just enough to keep fuel from puddling behind it and that creates a swirl effect into the combustion chamber, which allows a lean A/F ratio, thus, saving gas. then when the "vtec" kicks in, it opens the fourth valve as far as the other. you can see other examples of this swirl philosophy on the venerable Type-R b-series cams. one of the primary lobes is slightly smaller than the other, to allow for that swirl. that doesnt mean that its made for gas mileage, its just a byproduct of good engineering. also, look at the HP to displacement figures of vtec engines to those of competitors cars. compared to the toyota 4age, which is arguably one of the best four cylinders ever made, it is a twin cam 1.6L making from 118 to 125 w/ similar compression ratios to that of the d16. so vtec can level the playing field with a similar dual cam. yeah, i prefer my screaming DOHC VTEC to that of the gentle puff you get from the SOHC switching over, but i refuse to resign it to a reputation of a "gas saver".

ORIGINAL: LEVIII

Eh eh eh eh, you said all.
Christ... you're blowing that WAY the hell out of proportion.

That 10 second D series ISN'T STREET LEGAL. It was built for drag racing and is no longer a gas saving motor. You're talking about pro drag racing, not a daily driver.

Why don't you try to stick to the point. Here let me rephrase it for you since you're trying to pick a stupid pointless fight with me.

All D series street legal cars with sohc vtec are meant to save the consumer on gas. They aren't meant to be big time Corvette killing street terrors. PERIOD.

Wanna build it? FINE. I don't care, but the original purpose they serve was to save gas.

I hate stupid arguements that have absolutely no purpose in the discussion whatsoever.

So when i said all sohc's are gas savers you, for some reason, instantly include pro drag built cars in the mix?

completely off based brain you have there.

Since when is a fully built dragster a street car getting 30 mpg? You knew what I meant.
