Default 93 Premium Fuel vs 87 Regular Fuel, which is better for the long haul?

Hello all:

1st post here....I have a 2006 Civic EX Sedan, Automatic. Purchased August 2006, replaced a 1994 Saturn SL 2, which died with approx 130,000 miles on it.

My questions are: is there a long term benefit to using 93 Octane Premium Gasoline vs 87 Regular? Will the engine stay cleaner due to better combustionvia a better grade of gasoline? Or, being that 87 Octane is what the car is designed for, would that be the better choice?

And does using Honda brand oil help, or it is really no different than conventional 10 W 30?

What I am try to do is make this car last 200,000 + miles if possible and would be willing to use premium gas and the Honda brand Oil if it would help the engine stay cleaner vs. cheaper oil and gas.

Thanks for your input all! Very pleased with my Civic so far.

Ocatain rating is just how resistant the gas is to detonation. You should probably be using 5w30 not 10w30. It just depends on where you live and the climate.

I love my 93 octane gas, i get better gas milage and your prety much assured its going to burn better. I even try to throw a bottle of octane booster on every fill up and especially on the long 2 hour drives to PA from NYC.

- buy quality gas(Texaco, Sunoco etc) minimum 89 octane, oil change frequency is more important than brand and I would think you need 5w20 but really you should read the owners manual , also scheduled maintenance is important for ALL fluids and filters if you wanna keep the car a long time

My Civic, according to the manual, is set up to run on 87 regular. I believe all Civics are (correct me if I am wrong) so unless its an SI or turbo'd or something else along that line, ie higher compression ratio, why waste money running premium when Honda designed the car to run on regular? Any better gas mileage is just probably offset by the cost of gas.

I used to do the brand name gas thing until I saw trucks from different gas stations getting gas from the same fuel depot (there is one around here). Then I'd see the same truck I saw at Shell as at Wawa...hmmm. However, there are some stations that do use only their brand gas, though I'm not quite sure what they are. So I do avoid really sketchy looking stations but have no allegiance to one or the other.

Its probably most important to change your oil every 3K/3mo, if using regular old oil. Thats at least what I've done religiously, 96 civic hx w/ 250,000 and a 2000 Jeep Wrangler with 150,000...all on regular 87...

i have an si...so idk if i have room to talk...running 93 or higher (octane boost is great) and synthetic oil...but i used to own an integra, which only recieved shell v-power every 4th fill up. i have a freind who was a b-tech at bmw, and he said thats the minimum you can do to keep your valves and injectors clean. if your car is made for 87, it will actually get a better mpg with said 87. but your pick up will be slightly increased with the higher of octane gas, it also burns cleaners. hope any of this helps..
