Default 98 Civic Cabin Air Filter

Ok so yesterday I drove to the store and no A/C at all (not hot or cold). Leaving the store the A/C worked fine, any and several trips later it still works. Any thaughts on that? Today I decided to look at the Cabin Filter. Looked ay my owners manual but no mention of it. Online several people say that only 01 and up civics have them. But my civic does have a door behind the glove box & when I removed it I saw an empy area full of leaves where a filter should go. Why was it missing, why no mention in the owners manual. Even the dealer said my car does not have one. Anyway I want to replace it but there is a metal brace that looks a pain to remove as cant see the bolts to remove it. How do you put the big filter in the hole. Sorry but dont have a pic.

The door is the fresh / recirc control. When you select recirc, the door opens and pulls air from inside the car. If you have a lot of leaves in there, you can drop the blower motor and clean most of them out.

Well it turns out that my car does have a slot for a cabin air filter. Usdm cars did not have a filter installed supposedly because the supplier and honda america had a dispute. All civics 98 and up that had a/c were equipped with the cabin filter slot. Anyway, today in the morning I cleaned out the slot with a shop vac and also removed the blower motor. TONS of crap in there, leaves and dirt. I think it took me like an hour just to get all the crap picked up with my vac. This should be done every 15k. I did not want to spend 60.00on a factory filter so I just got a nice home filter, built a frame to hold it and put it in. A/C now blows much colder and with much more force & it actually smells nice instead of dirt just blowing in your face(now I know why my car was so dusty even a few hours after I cleaned the inside). The before picture was after I had cleaned out most of the leaves.
