yes, for the full effect you need both.

intake, header, exhaust, and high-flow cat are all upgrades that compliment each other in power when combined.

My best advice for buying things is to browse websites and forums and youtube and figure out what you want, and then go to ebay and search for that. If you know what you want prior to visiting ebay, ebay can be a great tool for finding hella good deals on brand name parts.

It's among the best of Honda SOHC motors; However, Honda DOHC engines are better than it.

Yea, you have VTEC. How VTEC Works: http://www.honda-marine.com/video/VTEC.wmv (your engine does not engage VTEC at 4500RPM, contrary to the example in the video)

After you watch the video the following will make more sense:
The difference between SOHC and DOHC VTEC though is that SOHC VTEC only can change the intake valves lift/duration by using the VTEC lobes because the spark plugs are in the way of the exhaust side. DOHC VTEC changes both the intake and exhaust valves lift/duration, because the spark plugs are in between the two cams and aren't in the way, with one cam controlling intake and the other controlling exhaust. That's pretty much the main difference.

yea, sadly though to get much real power out of a D-series you have to either do a huge build, or slap on a turbo or spray some nitrous, or any combination of those.
