Default Brand New 2008 Civic LX

I have to say, I'm a long time Chevy fanatic, but I just purchase a brand new 2008 Civic LX this past Saturday due to the prices of gas. They gave me the car with a full tank of gas. I reset the miles to calculate how many miles to a full tank of gas I could get, and to my surprise I was very disappointed to see that I only got 221 Miles to a full tank of gas. So my question is to all, could this be right, cause if it is the car is going back to the dealer, cause it isnt getting the fuel mileage it is supposed to. Please lend some advise. All is appreciated.

Thanks,

1st question is why would anyone buy a NEW car to save money on gas. It would take years of owning a new fuel efficient car to start seeing savings, not sure how long you plan on owning it.

but just figure out your gas mileage. Take total miles driven divided by gallons of fuel used.

my 00 ex gets around 33mpg on average, usually go 275-290 miles before having to fill up. It's an 11 gallon tank, but it won't let me come close to using that all up. I usually fill up no more than 9 gallons at a time.

Are you sure that the tank was actually 100% full when you pressed the reset button?
How do you know you ran 221 miles on a full tank. Did you run it until it ran out of gas and died?

Just fill up your tank all the way at the gas station, press the reset button before you start the car. Then next time you get gas fill it up all the way. Then take the miles on the trip meter and divide them by the number of gallons the pump says that you bought. This is your mpg. When you do this, make sure you stop pumping at the same amount of clicks on the pump each of the two times you fill up, for a more accurate mpg reading.

Saving money on gas is perfectly logical reason to buy a new car. In the deal you also get a very fun car to drive with Honda reliability. And who has a clue as to how much higher fuel prices are going to rise. So congratulations on a smart move.

Something is definately wrong here. I got a 08 EX same motor as yours and am averaging 420-450 miles per tank. I average 37.3- 39.3 mpg 50-50 driving. 23 miles one way to work, filling up every 10-11 days.I have owned the car for 6 weeks and have put in $141 in fuel so far. You have to change your driving habits big time. Use cruise whenever possible , anticipate red lights , i only go about 2 miles over speed limit. Also if you leave 10 minutes early it makes up for any inconvenience on the way. I had a dodge ram pickup that got 17 mpg at best and never cared about the price of gas, now all i do is brag to the guys at work and cuss out idiots flying by me only to get stuck at a red light.Just the other day i had a guy pass me in a truck and i caught up with him at 5 red lights , some people just will never get it but they complain about paying $4.25 a gallon. As for taking it back i strongly urge you to change your habits and give it a try . I also have never had my car over 3000 rpm's if that helps you any by telling you how slow i start out .Also i havehad the fuel dots completely gone and still had over 1 1/2 gallons of gas left.and as for inthezoneac's comment on buying a new car ,my gas savings alone make my car payment. I strongly disagree with that comment but everyone has their own opinion.....let me know if you get any better mileage GOOD LUCK

Congrats on the new car.

I had traded my Chevy Silverado in on an 06 Civic Coupe a couple of years ago because of the gas prices hitting $2.00 a gallon and also because of the gas mileage. My Silverado was getting 18 mpg and my Civic gets about 38.
I think you should take some advice and recheck your numbers again. I get around 250 miles on 1/2 a tank of gas and it gets down to about 3 squares left at about 390 miles, which is about 3 gallons left.

Have fun with your new car.

Be patient. i bought a new 2007 EX two months ago and do pretty much stop and go driving - have less than 800 miles on the car because i work close to home. i get about 24 or 25 mpg but expect it go up upon some interstate travel this weekend. an earlier poster also said mileage gets better as the car is broken in. mine is a5 speed stick so i know my mileage will be good regardless. just give it time. love the car!!!

My 2008 LX has been tracked for mileage since the day it was purchsed new.
It has had 14 fill-ups from 3/15/08 to 7/6/08.
The first tank got 30.08 mpg
The lowest was 29.66 mpg
The highest was 32.66 mpg
The average has been 31.2 mpg
The driving was primarily to and from work and some leasure drivin on the weekends.
Some stop and go rush with some freeway (about 50-50) on travels to and from work.
