Which civic engine lasts the longest?
Shopping around for a 94-00 Civic 5 speed. I have read that the NON VTECK engine is better on gas, but does it last just as long. which engine is the best for the manual civic?????? What is the difference?

The best motor for any small civic, as far as mpg+hp goes, in my opinion, is the d15b 3 stage vtec. but good luck finding one.
there's a guy that tuned his relatively stock d15b to get 35mpg and 127hp. couple little mods but it worked well.
The older d15/d16 from the 88-91s last quite a long time. I averaged 35mpg on my 90 base model. slow though, only 70hp. the 107 hp model only gets around 30mpg due to the short geared transmission. 3k rpm at 60mph burns up gas.
The motors haven't really changed much from 88-00 as far as the d series platform goes.
Why would non-VTEC be better on gas? When you have VTEC, you want to use it all the time, that's what kills gas mileage. Regular driving should be no different.
Get what works for your budget. If you're asking about the best combo, well, there isn't a "best" one. There's just one that's right for your style of driving.

Non-VTEC can last as long as VTEC does. The bottom part of the engine is identical, only the head is changed to make it VTEC. Engine life is almost entirely determined by changing the oil often enough and not driving abusively.

my 97 lx with completely stock d16y7 might be a little on the slow side but i do average 37mpg, its all about regular oil changes, proper tire size and inflation, and a good alignment. just my .02

D16Z6 In my honest opinion a our shop we had alittle old lady who had a civic with 400,000k on the odo, and it would have gone longer had she not been t-boned in the middle of a intersection. not to mention iv seen D16z6 with nothing but head studs take almost 15-20 psi and last alittle over 100k!

is the z6 head a better choice over the y8 for a mini me? I have had alot of people tell me to go z6 but y8s are all around my town and can be had for uber cheap!

That's an 2002, and oil changes every 8,000kms. 85% of that is done on Hwy and I'm getting about (on average 735km to the tank)..a little less come the winter time..
