If you need it under $1k, your best bet is a D16Z6 or Y8. Like I said, you can pick them up for ~$500 used, usually lower. As a rule of thumb, expect to spend a minimum of $2,000 on a decent bare-bones turbo setup, and if you get deep enough into the setup, you're looking at double that if not more.

If i where you id go ahead and do a d16y8 turbo. I have a d16y8 in mine with a crap eBay turbo kit that only cost 700 dollars. i have headers and exhaust and recently installed aem air intake. the engine internals are bone stock its my daily driver i only run 6 psi tho to be safe. its not a bad setup but not really outstanding power but enough to keep me happy
