Default Driving with a bad ECU

I have a 94 Civic ex automatic. I've been told that the ECU is bad (the check engine light is on, always) but that everything else is ok.

Question is, how long can I drive the car with out the working ECU? ALso if I have to replace, which model number would I need?
Thanks in advance

What is the trouble code? You can check it yourself using the jumper wire method.

Almost always when the light comes on it is not a bad ECU, it is something else.

Mk, as usual, is absolutely correct. Pull the CEL codes and go from there.

Click the CEL link in my signature.

the mech said that the PC unit was damaged. In the write up it said it would not affect driveability. However I was wondering if that is truly accurate.

Don't necessarily believe everything your mechanic says. Give us more information so we can confirm or debunk his diagnosis.

If the ECU is damaged, when you go to retrieve the code you will get nothing. That's how you can tell.

Sometimes, but not always.
