Default Gauge problem/swapped cluster

I got an EX cluster to put in my DX. I decided to swap odometers to keep the mileage current. I popped the needle off of the speedometer and swapped the odometers. When I put everything back together, the speedo was wrong. With the car not moving, it read 20 m.p.h. I popped the needle off and put it back on at 0. Was this the right way to do it?

Also, I need to get a new fuel/temp meter. This might sound stupid, but how will I know what position to put the new needles in? If anybody has ever replaced a gauge/needle, please offer some tips! Thanks.
