^^ Yep, a spun bearing will leave you with metal shards in the oil. You don't have to convert to a OBD1 engine harness if you go with a z6 block. You just wouldn't wire up the knock sensor, there are a few little things as well, but I couldn't tell you what since I don't have 1st hand experience. However, i was planning on doing something like that in the near future. And yes, the y8 can go on the z6 block.

J/w, are you able to put a z6 block in your car since you are in CA?

If you plan on keeping the car, good luck with the motor swap.

I'm pretty sure the law in California is that the engine must be the same year/newer than the car it is going to be put in.

You can use a newer engine than the car, or convert from OBDI to OBDII. But you can't go the other way. The engine and the control system can't be a type from a model year older than the car is.

That's because pollution standards have gotten tighter through the years and a car must continue to meet the standards applicable to its model year. It is not legal to modify a car in a way that would be expected to cause it to make more pollution (i.e. lower tech engine / controls). Technically this is true in all 50 states but California is really the only one that checks.

well, the mettle shards will have traveled, chances are you toasted your crank, and maybe even your block, you CAN repair it though, by getting a line-bore done, but chances are it will be cheaper to get another engine, good luck though....

Get another block, or if you find a cheap full swap get that. You need a 96-newer motor if you're in Cali.

+1
And I'm sure you drive a little more cautious then the OP.

No matter what it is, it can't be good that you have metal shards in your oil. So yes something is really wrong.
