Default Mileage

I have a 91 Civic DX hatchback with 154k on the clock. I am getting about 31 ~ 32 MPG and I have a feeling I should be getting better. I have replaced obvious things, like plugs, wires, rotor, etc without much gain in MPG.

So, two questions: 1) What MPG should I be getting and 2) what else should I look at?

Thanks,
GRIZZ

do you have an auto or a manual?

If you have an auto, the numbers sound right.... for a 5-speed, they sound a little low, but that depends on your driving style

*edit: have you changed your fuel filter?

I have an auto. I think my PCV valve needs to be replaced. I hit it with some carb cleaner last night and I can hear it clicking open and close now when I pinch off that hose. We'll see if the mileage goes up.

Thanks,

your car is coming up on 20 years old, so wear and tear on the engine will reduce fuel mileage as well. if it's running properly, then those numbers are fine.

yeah, for an auto those numbers sound just about right. I'm getting around 30mpg with my auto, but I tend to have a heavy foot getting up to speed, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

check out fueleconomy.gov click View MPG estimates from drivers like you on the bottom left hand side and go from there.

i have 219,000 miles on my civic HX 5 speed. I think i get good gas mileage, but i only drive like 20 miles a day. I just put a jdm performance exhaust system on it, and i think im geting a little better gas mileage.

Next im geting a new air intake

its so easy to conserve gas with a manual..

I would buy a manual next time, but I got this car for $500 and the cost of a new water pump, timing belt and used radiator. So, I have about $800 into it, which also includes new tires along the way. I have yet to go through a full tank since changing the PCV valve, so I will report back after that.

Thanks for the government link on mileage.
