Default Miles Per Gallon (MPG) Record?

2003 DX 5mt Sedan, very black and very clean (high speed, low drag--you'd be surprised what a coating of dust can do to your drag coeffiecient!).

Okay, here are the numbers from my records:

40.62
39.89
37.24
39.74
42.44
37.59
40.03

Average: 39.65 statute miles per U.S. standards gallon.

13.2 gallon tank equals theoretical 523.8 miles per tank equals 847.88 kilometres per tank.

Lower than I thought it would be, but still not bad.

I usually drive in a spirited manner. The 42.44 mpg was achieved on the highway, doing between 65 mph and as fast as the traffic was going on Interstate 81 (some hills and curves, lots of tractor/trailers to draft behind).

I fill up at the same pump at the same station, go to the first click on auto-fill and then squeeze one off until it clicks again (you need to allow for fuel expansion within the tank, so don't overfill it).

I'm looking for the top mpg here! Is anyone out there doing some aerodynamic work to lower drag at highway speeds?

For comparison, my MINI Cooper S got 32 mpg normally, mid 20s when I beat it, and my Ford Exploder gets 18 mpg when my wife drives it, 21.5 mpg when I drive it on cruise control at 65 mph with about 700 pounds of crap stuffed in the back.

The C-4 Corvette I hope to buy in August will probably get better mpg than the Exploder.....

Damn, those are good numbers. Who needs a hybrid if you can get a solid 40MPG.

On that same note, I've been wondering what's the best MPG you could get by modding a civic with one of the smaller vtec engines.

Take an EG VX hatch, pull out all the weight you can, toss in a better intake and exhaust, lean out the fuel mixture a bit, give it lightweight wheels and tires, lower it a touch...

so as not to hijack the thread, the best MPG I've gotten was 38 with my EK hatch. 33 with my EG hatch, but it has a really tired engine.

I have 1994 Honda Civic LX 4dr with auto with 148,000 miles and get about 44-45 mpg during 65mph on the freeway with cruise, city miles are 32-36 mpg. Only mods are is follows: K/N cold air intake system, Amsoil 5W30 oil with Amsoil tranny fluid, opened spark plug gap 5 thousands, Jacob ignition wires and running Michelin Hydroedges at 41 psi. Not the best, my record is my 1988 Honda Civic LX 4dr with 200,000 miles with similar mods listed above got me close to 48 mpg at 60 mph during my travels to Wisconsin back in 1999 - 2000. Not bad considering some of the stories I heard about the 1992-1993 Honda Civic DX 4dr with a 5 speed stick getting 50 mpg at 55mph. Or the 1986-7 Honda CRX HX getting close to 60 mpg at 55 mph back in its day. Nowdays with emissions, and safety related items and luxury causes a noticeable weight gain. The new 2006 Honda Fit gets 38 mpg now weighing close to 2600 lbs, while older Civics get the same if not better mileage due to lighter weight. Just my two cents.

I have a 5 speed 2006 civic lx sedan and I got 38.5 mpg while driving between 80 and 100mph on the interstate in georgia with the air on moderate. I also have a AEM CAI installed. I dont know what that did to it.

2001 civic ex coupe stock no mods...other than tint job and spoiler

The ac eats the fuel mileage I found out. We got like 450 on the freeway with the ac on. With the ac on and off around my town I clocked it and got a amazing 37 miles per gallon. I was very happy with this since its not even on the freeway.

Now with the ac it goes way way down to like 32 miles per gallon on the freeway. We could get prob 40 or more on the freeway with the ac off since i'm getting 37 around here.
