check the engine code and the ECU code and let us know what those are.

i guess since you are on OBD0 that might explain not throwing a code for the unplugged oil pressure switch.
i'm pretty sure that you don't have VTEC right now though because of it. once you get that fixed you'll have better times and more power.

Took off the RPM selector switch and found this underneath.

From the number MSD 8950 i found this :

Quote :
This switch has two activation wires: one to ground a circuit, the other to open a circuit. Simply plug in an RPM module, and wire the switch to the circuit you want to control. When the engine reaches your set RPM, the circuit activates and stays on until the RPM falls below the set amount.

So.... not a rpm limiter, but activator. What could it activate? We can also assume that it doesnt work right now because of a bad ground or the relay its connected to doesnt work/is all corroded up.

The engine block has this stamped onto it.

walk me threw how to check the codes. Im assuming its the same as most other manufactures where you connect two pins together with a paper clip?

Im pretty sure i dont have vtec, nor did it ever come with this engine. (from what i got after reading about this engine for 30 seconds)

edit : alrighty.. so yes i do have vtec according to Wikipedia? Even if it doesnt say on the valve cover?

also, according to wikepida (right on the honda civic page) it says the D16z6 wasnt offered until 92. But if i click on the D16z6 engine, i get this page . CLICK HERE . It says :

Found in

* 1991-1992 Honda civic si
* 1992-1995 Honda Civic EX, EX-V and SI
* 1992-1995 Honda Civic ESi (European Market)
* 1993-1995 Honda Del Sol Si (only USDM)
* 1993-1995 Honda Del Sol ESi (European)

So was it, or wasnt it offered in 91. If it wasnt, that means that someone actually swapped in this engine?

So.... good engine or not? Here are some exterior pictures of it if that helps.

Ya that engine definitely isn't a bad starting point. And yes that motor was swapped in.

lol, i already told you it wasn't a rev limiter
it was probably hooked to a shift light, and turned the shift light on at whatever RPM the MSD module was set to.

D16Z6 was used in 92-92 EX and Si

check your ecu. since you're not throwing a code, i suspect whoever did the swap didn't swap the ECU. make sure it's a P28.
if it's not, then VTEC definitely isn't working, and you need to get the wiring so that the oil pressure switch on the VTEC solenoid works.

if you fix VTEC you will probably gain 20-25hp

I dont think it was a shift light, why would you go threw all that trouble and spend money on these parts for a light to turn on.

I just found this : http://www.geocities.com/chipman_13/mini-me-parts.html

quote :

VTEC Activation:

VTEC Activation for Z6 & Y8 - post by: NoahK
I have dyno tested both the d16z6 and d16y8 cams:
For a d16z6 cam the optimal rpm seems to be around 4500 rpms. The best VTEC point will move around a bit from car to car, but 4500 seems to be about average (4800 is stock on the d16z6).
For a d16y8 the best rpm for VTEC is 5200 (the stock time).

Main reason for leaving the activation point near OEM, is the intake air speed is not moving fast enough for VTEC to operate correctly, in a N/A engine. However, running Forced Induction is a different story tho.

MSD rpm switch MSD-8950 and MSD-8671 which will give you a range of 4600-6800rpm to activate the VTEC.

Could the MSD switch be used to BY PASS the factory CPU and still activate VTEC ? I think im gonna need to go for a drive and test it out.

here is the computer located? Driverside kick pannel?

oh that makes a lot more sense. so i guess that would mean your VTEC is working after all. that's good because now you don't have to fix it because 'it ain't broke'. lol
