One very long night

Go to his trial. If he gets convicted of stealing your car, the judge will order him to pay "restitution" to you for the damage to the car. No need to sue him. The little pittance he makes stamping license plates or painting office furniture will go to you, he can't spend it on cigarettes.
And even if you don't smoke, you don't want to be in prison without an ample supply of cigarettes.

just take the police report when it s ready to be picked up and goto the clerks office and tell them what happened also you can talk to the district attorney they will tell you what is going to happen in my state we take the police report to the clerks office and put a bench warrant on them and the judge will (if found guilty) make them pay restitution and they are on 1-2 yrs supervised probation, this means that the probation officer makes sure they get you paid or they get violated and get sent back to jail for 3-4 months just for violating probation and when they get out there time with probation starts all over again

Get a shop's estimate of the damage and talk to the prosecutor's office about it. Orders for restitution are routine in cases involving theft, vandalism, etc. You will almost certainly be contacted by the prosecutor anyway since you are the star witness. Do not talk to the thief or his lawyers.
