So, if its a stick - no overdrive button. And as the former owner of a 99Si, I know that you should be getting pretty good gas mileage being in 5th gear. Just make sure you keep her under 3,000 RPM whilst on the city streets.
He never said "button". 5th gear is an overdrive gear on the vast majority of transmissions. If the gear ratio for a given gear is less than 1:1 (ie, the Si's 0.875:1 5th gear ratio), that gear is considered an overdrive.

And fun fact of the day #342: The K20a/a2 uses a 6-speed transmission with a double-overdrive. The ratios for 5th and 6th gear in those transmissions are both overdrives.

reading > me... stupid ADD lol

Either way, with a 5-speed, you still (usually) have an overdrive gear... just not a button

All an overdrive button on an automatic is is an overdrive selector... it's the same idea as putting it into D... all it does is tell the transmission what gears it's allowed to go into; select OD and it can select whatever gear it wants to, provided the rpm's are high enough to go into a particular gear.

Indeed. Thats why the button thing confused me. My 05 dodge has a 5th and 6th gear OD just like your random fun fact of the day #342.

yea should i be using d3 or d4 driving around the city? is there an overdrive on this car?
thanks

Driving around the city I found that it really didn't matter. You might have a little bit more kick in D3, for the city, but you'll use a little more gas too because of the higher rpm. I always drove in D4, no issues, no slugging.

d3 & d4 won't be any different in the city; all d4 does is let the transmission go into 4th gear. I don't know what the minimum speed to get into 4th would be, but I'd imagine you won't be seeing those kinds of speeds in a city.

Yeah sorry about the whole button thing; It's just that I've never been in a car that does 70mph in 5th gear as high as 4000rpms. I didn't really think there would be anything to make the rpms drop but I was just wondering.
