got a speedo problem. When I turn on the car, its pinned at 20 mph. For the week that i've owned it, i've only seen it work twice - then back to 20 mph. I figured it could either be a bad cluster or the vss. I tried an auto vss into my manual tranny, weird, didnt think it would work becuase the auto vss is smaller then manual vss. Tried it anyway, turned on the car, just turned the key right before ignition - needle dropped down to 15 mph. I put back all parts into the rights cars, forgot to plug the socket into the vss in my car, turned the car on, still pinned at 20 mph, I then realized it wasnt pluged in, still pinned at 20 mph. I even scanned the obd, "0" errors/faults. Could this be a bad cluster? and should i even buy a new vss just to be sure?

 

What year is car? Sounds like the speedo is bad and needs to be swapped out.

 

its a 98 coupe EX, manual. I think so too, but i want to be sure whatvever i fix is the right one

 

Wait for more experienced to chime in, as I'm still new. But that's what it sounds like. Very easy to replace. Two screws for the bezel, four screws for the cluster, pop the plastic pieces off carefully watching the one light with the wire, four screws hold in the speedo. Install is simply the reverse.
