Timing belt interval. Mileage or age ?
I have a 01 LX automatic. It has led a charmed life from new with my senior citizen dad as its original owner and in the first 9 years of its life , racked up 24 k miles.
I inherited the car and it now has 55 k on it. A lot of those miles are from regular drives to New York City which is about 175 miles away.
I asked my garage guy about timing belt replacement and he said to base it off of actual mileage , not age. I believe 80 k is the magic number for the belt replacement ?
Am I gambling with this or can I run it to 80 k which would take me about another 2 1/2 years ?
I do NOT push the car at all. If I hit 70 mph , it is unintentional. I set the cruise at 65 when that is the limit and do my best to enjoy the ride no matter how many people go by me.
Other than putting a CD player from an 02 Civic and running studded tires in the winter , she is stock.

the honda service manual says to replace the timing belt every 110,000 miles or 84 months so 7 years. rubber belts will dry and crack over time even sitting on a store shelf just like tires. your mechanic sounds like an idiot and i would think twice about having him work on your car here is a maintenance schedule directly from honda Maintenance Minder | Maintenance Schedule | Honda Owners Site.

I don't know if I'm posting this the right way. I have access to a 1989 Civic LX. It's been garaged, had only one owner who became ill years ago and just left it in the garage. What's amazing is that the car has only 25,000 miles on it! I noticed the post above and the car hasn't been run much in the past 10 years and it's never had a timing belt change. It runs great and is perfect in and out. The owner wants $6,000.00 which seems high to me, especially with the need to change out the belt and as you'd expect the exhaust system, but with that mileage this car isn't even broken in yet.
Has anyone seen anything similar?
