Timing belt or Timing chain
I bought a 2007 4 dr civic and my b/f read something about a timing chain in it BUT after we bought it can't find that it is a timing belt or timing chain anywhere on the books. So my question is does the 07 civic have timing belt or chain?

RE: Timing belt or Timing chain
I don't think the owner's manual will tell you if you have a chain or belt. Check the maintanance schedule. Belts generally need to be changed every 60K and it will say "Timing Belt" or something like that. I do think that the 07s use a chain.

RE: Timing belt or Timing chain
The 8th generation Civics all use a chain, I was talking with a Honda mechanic about that the other day. Officially they're good for 100k miles, and a change is recommended, at most, whenever doing a major overhaul of the engine or whenreplacing the clutch; but in fact many users have put on several hundred thousand miles without ever changing the timing chain.

Do they chains have to adjusted periodically? I know that on motorcycle chains, the chain links stretch and you have to adjust the chan and pull the tire back a bit to keep proper tension the chain. Of course, a motorcycle chain has ALOT of stress on it since all the HP of the engine is transmitted via the chain. I was wondering if the cam chain has be similarly adjusted.

I needed to KNOW ... for SURE ... what the recommended interval for the Belt replacement was; so, I called HONDA and spoke with Customer Service.
In those geographical areas which are always hot or cool ... where Engine Compartment Temperature might exceed 105-Degrees or remain below freezing for days at a time ... The recommendation from HONDA is: 60,000 Miles.
For the vast number of vehicles operated within a Temperate Zone, NOT having Heat Waves and Long bouts of below freezing temperatures: 110,000 Miles.
