hey discounttires.com says i need 205/40/17 if i want to get 17inch tires, but im interested in buying some used rims and tires from someone the only problem is their tires are 225/45/17 i dont know much at all about tires but what will i have to do to get theirs to fit my 99 civic, is there anything i can do? please help any help would be much appreciated thanks in advance...

 

The 225/45-17's will fit, but your speedometer will be way off, your odometer will be recording the wrong mileage, and the tires will probably rub if you're lowered.

If the wheels are a real bargain, I'd say buy them, get a set of 205/40-17's, and sell the 225/45's (in my experience, tire shops will ask you if you want to keep the tires they take off your wheels).

 

thanks for your answer, they are a pretty good deal but i might have to look elsewhere i think on tirediscount they are selling my size of 17s for like 70 a tire which is pretty good...is tirediscount reputable like are their tire sizes that they say will fit your car are they accurate?

I just went to a shop and ordered a set of 17 inch rims with low profile tires for 799. they are brand new and will be mounted and balanced by the shop. Dont know how off my spedometer will be but im not lowering my car or anything, and i think my stock wheels are 16inch so it shouldnt be too off.

 

well with my experince they will be fine in the rear on stock suspension BUT if your lowered its might rub...

when i bought my first set of rims they had 225-45 or 55s i cannt remember they rubbed infront when turning so i replaced them pretty soon with some 205-40-17s and they didnt rub anymore... then i just saved up money and then replaced the rear tires later on.

i kept the good tires as spares just incase a bad blowout and needed a replacement tire ASAP....
tho i only kept one because the front 2 were badly worn and one rear had a wicked bubble in the side! but at least i got one backup tire.

if all 4 tires are good you can always keep the larger ones in the rear and when they wear out get the other 2 larger tires put on the rims in the back

IMO they actualy seem to fill up the wheel wells better at least in the rear. but if your lowered then you definatly need to replace all 4.

 

I wouldn't do that if I were you. They tell you to buy a specific tire for a reason. I understand that you want to buy used because it's cheaper, but if that's the case, buy the rims with the right size rubber. It's not like it's hard to find a set of rims for a honda civic anyway.

The Radius of the 205/40/17 tires is 11.7 while the radius of the 225/45/17 tires is 12.5. And the tires are 2 cms wider. This wouldn't be smart to do because it would probably rub on corners or over bumps if not all the time. Call the dealer (or any tire distributor) and ask for their advice... see what they say.
