Default V-TEC or not??

Hey I'm still learning bout Civics and I've got a question bout mine. It's a 98 EX Coupe but I'm not sure it actually has a V-TEC engine, I know that they come stock with them but when I bought it at the dealership last year they said they'd checked it out and it wasn't a V-TEC, so I'm thinking maybe the guy that owned it before swapped the engine with a standard 1.6L or the dealership didn't know what the hell they were talking bout. I know somewhere on the engine theres gotta be a stamp on the engine or something, right? Anyway, it also has a SOHC V-TEC sign on the passenger door, someone, help me out...

The engine block should have D16Y8 stamped on it.

alright, that was quick, i went and checked and found a sticker on the drivers side of the engine that said D16Y8, so I'm assuming thats good. HA, that means the dealership didn't know! Damn, feels good, now i gotta know, anyone tell me if the mods i see on ebay are even worth the $50 or whatever they cost, apparently they're supposed to alter the sensor on the intake and make the car put out fuel as if the engine is cold so you run lean all the time and get more HP. That true? Or even worth it?

My 98 EX has SOHC VTEC, so I would assume your's does too.
And I don't think your 50 dollar mod would do much.
