VTEC Light Installed

VTEC Light Installed
Hi All,
Just finished installing a VTEC light into my 1999 Civic EX. I was wondering if anyone knows why the light has 2 different stages? Around 5500 RPM the light flips on and is very dim, and then around 6000 RPM it becomes really bright and I can hear the VTEC cross over. I have some pics and a video I recorded. I apoligize in advance for the crappy picture quailty... My girlfriend was holding the camera and doing her best to hold it steady...
Here's a link to the video. I had a car in front of me on the freeway so I couldn't lay into it, but you get the idea...

RE: VTEC Light Installed
There are a couple on here already, what year/model Civic do you have?
Here are some DIY links:
92-95 Civic DIY(Not enough pics I thought)
Another 92-95 Civic DIY (I don't like how this guys' looks, and he wired it into the Solenoid which I thought was unnecessary)
One with an ECU diagram for a 92-95 Civic
All this stuff for 92-95 and I have a 99...
Here's the one I used for a 96-00 Civic
I believe this guy has a 96-98 Civic, I cross checked the wiring diagram in my manual to make sure the ECU wiring was the same for 99-00 Civics. Here's a cut out of the wiring manual. Use this in conjunction with the last link I posted if you have 96-00 Civic.
*Note: From the manual diagram connector B is the middle connector on the ECU. The VTEC solenoid is the green wire with the yellow stripe. NOT The yellow wire with the green stripe. That is the Fuel Pump...

RE: VTEC Light Installed
I have one but mine doesn't get brighter as the rpm get higher.
My car doesn't have airbags, so I had the "srs" light always on and in the process of getting rid of that annoying light, I decided to replace it with a vtec light. But mine says "cool" lol

so if you can hear it and you know when it engages then why do you need a light? Its not like a rev limiter or shift light... pointless IMO but to each his own.

RE: VTEC Light Installed
I don't see anything wrong with knowing when VTEC is engaged. It's nice to see when the solenoid actually receives the signal from the ECU. The activation of VTEC occurs under specific conditions one of which is RPM. It helps me learn the characteristics of my engine. I found it interesting that the ECU incorporates what comp sci folks call "fuzzy logic". It's basically AI that helps better control your engine, but I don't know how much of that is applied to the activation of the VTEC mechanism. It does apply to the shifting on cars with automatic transmissions.
Also when I'm cruising with my stereo on I can't always hear the engine that well. Cheers to the guy who thought of doing this

ya i got a shift light for my 94civic because with the stereo pumping at times you cannt hear the engine at all.LOL i just wish it had a lower shift light point... still havent instaled it tho. i might do it today...
i like a shift light MAINLY for BEST gas milage driving..... shift low and just cruise..... with the system pumping you can accidently forget to shift a few times and be driving high rpms just driving...

Cool is there a DIY for a shift light somewhere? Sounds like you'd need to tap into the computer or install an external tachometer. I'm not having much luck searching the net/forums.
