On the 05 EX, your VTEC kicks in at 4500 rpms. Without at least an intake, it's almost impossible to hear the exact moment of changeover on a D17. If you drove an LX versus an EX back to back, you'd probabaly feel the difference in top end.

now is that nessasairly a bad thing? or does it matter?

Theres actually a window between 5300-5500 rpms where vtec may kick in. Depending on how much throttle your giving it. But over 5500 it will crossover no matter what.
