Default Which way are subs in the enclosure "supposed" to face?

My friend has been arguing with me every since I got my dual 12's and that huge box put in my trunk.
He said at all the car shows they have the subs facing the back towards the opening of the trunk so all can see them.
I have mine facing the front in the direction of me.

To me what he says is like saying when you put up a surround sound system to face the speakers in the opposite direction of you.

The sound is directed when its facing you. I told him those are just "shows" and its better to face them towards you.
Most people can understand what they look like when you tell them they are dual twelves and you show them that big box in your trunk.
If they cant you can always pop the back seat down.

low frequencies are not directional so you can basically put the box anywhere, facing any direction and it wont make a HUGE difference

generally i see the subs facing towards the back of the car, but if you prefer them flipped then go for it!

when i pop my trunk, you can see the magnet of the sub, i think it looks cool and it bumps REAL hard at the same time. Works for me.

Face it the other way and see how it sounds, we played around with the subs in my buds cars and when they were facing the front of the car, it sounded bad, but whenwe made them face the trunk lid, it sounded good.

As a person who designs, builds, and repairs speaker systems (home andpro-audio) I can give you the following advice: If you are interested inthe best sound inside the car, face the speakers inward and lower the rear seat when you can. If you want the best sound outside the car, then face them outward. Most folks I know with subs are more interested in the external sound (awe factor) than the internal (sound quality).

usually large speakers require more air space than smaller component speakers to make quality sound. is it ported or sealed?

if its a good SQ sub i like to aim the subs to the front thru the back seat.... BUT if its not a nice SQ sub then always face them to the rear for best sound....
with them firing forwards you also loose alittle of the low bass notes...
and firing the rear trunk lid way the subs tend to sound beter from the reflection of the bass note off the rear, only real downfall is ya tend to have ALOT of trunk rattle.

I tried facing them towards the front and towards the back, and i prefer the back because the bass bounces off the back and to me it sounds better that way.
