I probably wouldn't convert it to a manual. If I didn't like the lambo doors I just wouldn't get it, or if i thought I wouldn't after a while.
What gasmilage should a 96 hatch get with an auto? I don't know which one on www.fueleconomy.gov it would be.
How many feet of space on the floor is there from the rear seet to the hatch?

For the lambo doors, it depends on what kit he got. If it was a cheap kit the hinge can break and drop the door on the floor. Also the way that they installed it matters because on some kits, you have to bend the door panel so the door can swing up.
