Default winter care?

hey everyone,

just got my first car 2001 honda civic lx. I want to take good care of it.

my friend has a similar civic but 2000, and he is getting rust around the front tires.

I figure that most rust can be caused by winter salts etc. does anyone have any good products that will help prevent rusting?

thanks, keepUPplease

edit: i have found a product that looks to prevent rust by using something called saltbusters. it is called jack which i found through google. its at www.tryjacktoday.com
does anyone have experience with this product? looks promising, i will order and test it out and post a review

will update thread with results.

Rusting in wheel wells is a design problem, and there's not a whole lot you can do to prevent it, though it seems most hondas post 1998 dont seem to have as bad of a problem unless you had shoddy body work done. On my old 1990, if you took off the trim piece, it would help because it would catch the water and rot out the metal.

On the painted side of things, on the metal panels, you should touchup any nicks/chips with a bottle of OEM touchup paint every fall. I have a few of these chips and the touchup protects them from rusting really well.

A good claying and zaino CS will get you through the winter.

A lot of States use Mag Chloride on the roads. I call it Salt on Steroids. If you live where they use mag chloride there isn't much you can do to stop rust. About the best bet is to use car washes & pressure wash under them.

keep it clean, undercoated an dont be shy with your old oil. make sure to "spill" as much as you can all over it, my trunk is rust-PROOF from all the oil thats ran out of motors in there!
