Hi everyone,

I desperately need help/advice with my Civic. I am broke and don't want to scrap a car that I might be able to keep going a little longer!

My cheap old 2003 Civic 1.4 petrol has 170K on the clock and has served me well. I would like to keep it on the road if possible for another year or so as we have two young kids and are properly broke!

My car currently sounds like this! Sorry for poor video...


My local garage says its the 'gearbox bearing' that has gone and that it is uneconomical to repair. I want to find out if it is worth/possible for me to have a crack at it - the car drives well and has unfortunately just had anew MOT, tyres etc.

I would describe myself as an enthusiastic DIY type with a Haynes manual in hand! I do the full service, have changed most suspension and brake parts over the years, done the timing belt, electrical work etc. I have a decent set of tools but no dedicated garage/lift/workshop to do this in - I do it everything on street!

What do you guys reckon?

if you know how to drop the transmission then it should be easy.
